God wants to take ground in personal lives, but the posture of the heart matters. Psalm 119 says, “I incline my heart,” and that means a person has a part to play. God can move in an instant, and that is awesome, but freedom and healing are often a process. Two people can sit in the same room, hear the same words, and have completely different experiences because one heart is open and another heart is shut down.
Freedom has layers. Old struggles, temptations, hurts, and strongholds do not always disappear all at once. David’s war with Saul lasted a long time, but David grew stronger and stronger while Saul grew weaker and weaker. That is the question: not simply, “Is there still a battle?” but, “Am I getting stronger?” Anger, pornography, addiction, anxiety, and old ways of dealing with stress can be long wars. God does not call people to shame because they are still in process. God calls them to keep moving forward.
Proverbs says to free yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter. A gazelle running for its life does not care how it looks or what anyone thinks. Taking ground requires that kind of hunger. Compassion cannot become enabling, because no one can want freedom for another person more than that person wants it. A safety net helps someone get back up; a hammock lets someone stay comfortable while everybody else carries the weight.
Momentum matters. Saul lacked momentum, David created it, Solomon built it, and Rehoboam stopped it. David charged Solomon to be strong, obey God, and walk faithfully. Solomon asked for wisdom, and wisdom leads to wise choices. Mistakes do not have to define a life; they can refine it. A ship cannot be steered if it is not moving, so even small steps of obedience begin to create momentum.
Faithfulness with little things prepares a person for greater things. Hidden faithfulness can feel like practicing in an empty gym, where nobody sees the work. God sees it. Small wise choices, repeated day after day, build confidence, spiritual swagger, and a fruitful life. Surrender is not striving harder. Surrender is saying yes to the Holy Spirit and allowing Him to take ground in the places that have felt impossible to overcome.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Freedom often comes through a process David’s long war with Saul gives language for battles that do not end overnight. Ongoing struggle does not automatically mean failure, because God may be making one kingdom stronger while another grows weaker. Growth becomes visible through greater strength, quicker repentance, and a deeper refusal to stay where sin once ruled. [14:04]
- 2. Hunger determines how ground is taken The gazelle image confronts casual desires for change. A person who sees freedom as life or death begins to make different choices, seek help honestly, and stop protecting the very thing that is holding them down. God’s grace is not passive permission to remain stuck. [16:40]
- 3. Be a safety net, not a hammock Compassion helps hurting people without carrying responsibilities that belong to them. A safety net catches someone in crisis and helps them stand again, while a hammock can make comfort out of dysfunction. Love must sometimes refuse to enable what God is calling a person to confront. [18:23]
- 4. Wise choices build spiritual momentum Solomon asked for wisdom because momentum is built through choices made one step at a time. A life that has been still can begin moving today, even if confidence is low and the next step feels small. God can steer a life that is moving forward in obedience. [24:18]
- 5. Faithfulness prepares hidden fruitfulness Small acts of faithfulness may feel unseen, like practicing alone in the gym. God uses those repeated choices to prepare people for moments they could not handle before. A fruitful life is usually built through ordinary obedience that keeps showing up when nobody is watching.
