Bible Reading
Mark 7:24-30 And from there he arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And he entered a house and did not want anyone to know, yet he could not be hidden.
[45:50] But immediately a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit heard of him and came and fell down at his feet.
[49:57] Now the woman was a Gentile, a Syrophoenician by birth. And she begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter.
[49:57] And he said to her, “Let the children be fed first, for it is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs.”
[56:21] But she answered him, “Yes, Lord; yet even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs.”
[58:14] And he said to her, “For this statement you may go your way; the demon has left your daughter.” And she went home and found the child lying in bed and the demon gone.
[01:00:24]Mark 7:14-23 And he called the people to him again and said to them, “Hear me, all of you, and understand: There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.”
[36:51] And when he had entered the house and left the people, his disciples asked him about the parable. And he said to them, “Then are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him, since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled?” (Thus he declared all foods clean.)
And he said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him. For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”
[39:33]Isaiah 49:6 he says: “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the preserved of Israel; I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.”
[45:01]Hosea 2:23 and I will sow her for myself in the land. And I will have mercy on No Mercy, and I will say to Not My People, ‘You are my people’; and he shall say, ‘You are my God.’”
[45:01]Observation questions
- What details does Mark give about the woman and her daughter that show how many barriers stood between her and a Jewish rabbi? [45:50]
- In Mark 7:24-30, what actions show the woman’s desperation, and what actions show her trust in Jesus’ word?
- What two words or images in Jesus’ reply—“first” and “little dogs under the table”—leave room for hope rather than simply shutting the woman out? [53:58]
- How does the list of sins in Mark 7:21-22 support Jesus’ claim that the deepest uncleanness comes from within the human heart?
Interpretation questions
- Why does it matter that Jesus goes into Tyre and Sidon immediately after teaching that uncleanness comes from the heart rather than from food, hands, or contact with outsiders? [40:37]
- Jesus says that the children are to be fed “first.” How do Isaiah 49:6 and Hosea 2:23 help explain that Israel’s priority in God’s plan was never meant to mean the permanent exclusion of the nations? [44:46]
- The woman does not argue that she deserves a place or demand that Jesus act on her timetable. What does her response reveal about the difference between humble persistence and entitlement before God? [01:01:19]
- Jesus heals the daughter from a distance, and the woman goes home without asking for proof first. What does this show about the object of faith: the size of a person’s faith, or the character and authority of Jesus? [59:36]
Application questions
- Where might you be tempted to make Jesus manageable—accepting the parts of his words that suit you while resisting the parts that challenge your habits, priorities, or relationships? What would it look like to hear him on his own terms this week? [36:19]
- Jesus says that the problem of sin comes from within the heart. Which heart-level struggle from Mark 7:21-22 are you most likely to minimise, hide, or blame on outside circumstances? What could honest repentance in that area look like? [37:24]
- Is there a part of your story—failure, addiction, shame, family history, distance from church, or something else—that makes you feel outside Jesus’ mercy? How does this woman’s approach to Jesus speak into that fear? [01:00:49]
- When have you experienced what felt like silence or delay from Jesus? How can you keep bringing your need to him without turning your desperation into a demand for a certain answer or timetable? [01:01:43]
- Who might you quietly assume is unlikely to come to Jesus because of their lifestyle, beliefs, reputation, or past? What is one practical way you could remove a barrier rather than add one in your relationship with them? [01:03:25]
- The woman trusted that even a crumb from Jesus was enough. What “small crumb” of grace, truth, strength, or hope has Jesus already given you that you need to receive with greater trust and gratitude? [01:01:49]
