Jesus is not only the soft, easy Jesus holding the baby lamb. Jesus is loving, caring, forgiving, and gentle, but Jesus is also bold, demanding, tough, and sometimes just flat out brutal with the truth. Matthew 10 brings one of those hard red-letter statements: “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to this earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.”

Jesus sends out the disciples with the gospel of grace, love, and forgiveness, but Jesus warns that this will not be easy. The sword also points to the battle going on in the life of a believer. Gates are defensive, but a sword is offensive. Some struggles cannot be handled by saying, “I’m strong enough.” Alcohol, pornography, and every other temptation may require aggressive steps that remove access, build accountability, and attack the thing before it attacks back. God has already fought the battle for salvation through Jesus. Still, Satan fights to make believers fall and to steal the souls of children. Eternity is on the line, and this world is not home. Jesus brings peace with the Father, and obedience remembers that peace at the table, where bread and cup point again to the Son who trusted the Father and gave the ultimate sacrifice.
