From Water to Worship: Lessons on Sustained Faith

Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 3 bends the knee before the Father and asks for something huge, not just a little help for tired religious people. Paul asks that God would strengthen the inner being through the Spirit, that Christ would dwell in hearts through faith, and that God’s people would be rooted and established in love. The prayer reaches for language that almost sounds too big to hold, “how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ,” and then goes even further, asking that God’s people “may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”

The fullness of God is not a churchy phrase to admire from a distance. The fullness of God means the active, transforming presence of God’s love, character, and power filling a life until it spills over into everything that life does. Peter becomes the living example of that process. Jesus turns water into wine at Cana, and Peter sees more than a party rescue. Peter sees Jesus care about ordinary embarrassment, family shame, and everyday human need. The miracle is hidden from the crowd, but not from the servants, and not from the disciples. Peter’s curiosity begins to settle into foundational faith.

Peter’s faith grows again on the water. The old way of telling that story can make Peter sound like the failure in the boat story, but Peter is the only one who gets out of the boat. Peter hears one word, “Come,” and he steps onto the churning sea. Peter sinks, yes, but even in sinking he cries out to the only one who can save him, “Lord, save me.” That may be Peter’s greatest victory, not his greatest failure.

Jesus’ word for Peter’s doubt does not mean total unbelief. Distazo means a divided stance, standing in two places, trying to walk down two roads at once. Peter’s mind is split between the reality of the storm and the supernatural reality of Christ. The moment his focus is divided, he begins to sink. Faith requires sustained focus, not just an initial burst of courage.

Paul’s other great line lands there: God is able to do immeasurably more according to his power at work within God’s people. That power is the Holy Spirit. Peter’s whole life with Jesus prepares him to receive the Spirit and then act. The fullness of God looks like hospitality, welcome, compassion, practical wisdom, and ordinary people sharing Jesus in the places and platforms already in front of them.
