Paul’s final letter to Timothy carries the weight of last words from a man facing death, prison, and Rome’s execution. Chapter one called Timothy to fan the flame, chapter two called him to stay in the fight, and chapter three calls him to stay anchored. Paul shifts from gently restoring people caught in error to warning Timothy about people who persist in deception and need to be recognized and avoided.

Paul warns that the last days, the whole church age before the return of Christ, will have perilous times. These times are not just pressure from the outside culture. The danger can hide inside the church with people who “act religious” but reject the power that could make them godly. The list of sins starts with love and ends with love: lovers of themselves and lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. The root issue is not first behavior, but misdirected love. The symptoms show up in pride, greed, slander, betrayal, and brutality, but the sickness begins in the heart.

Self love is not the answer to that sickness. Drawing close to Jesus is the answer. Christ refuses to be outranked by any other love because whatever a person loves most will lead that person. Apostasy begins when love drifts away from Christ and turns inward toward self, money, pleasure, and control.

Paul then points Timothy to a different witness: a life that had doctrine, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, suffering, and rescue. Genuine discipleship is visible, costly, and shaped by the power of God. Everyone who desires to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution, and there will always be a cost to taking God’s word seriously.

Scripture becomes the anchor in a drifting age. All Scripture is God breathed, not merely human inspiration, and it points first to salvation in Christ. The word teaches what is right, exposes what is wrong, corrects what is crooked, and trains God’s people to stay right. Correction is not God pushing His people down, but God coming alongside, lifting them up, and equipping them for every good work.
