Paul grounds the call to surrender in the glory of Jesus Christ: “of him, and through him, and to him, are all things.” Christ already owns the glory, whether people give it to Him or try to take it for themselves. Romans 12:1 follows that truth with a reasonable response, not something extreme or grandiose. Believers belong to God, were made by God, and are called to offer their bodies to God as living sacrifices.
Paul’s plea carries real weight because the Holy Spirit, through an apostle with authority, says, “I beseech you.” God does not force a surrendered life through mere outward pressure. Each believer must decide today to present the body for Christ’s honor and glory. Missions starts there. Giving, praying, taking a short-term trip, or going to the field can only be rightly done through a day-to-day surrender of the whole life to God.
Romans 12:2 then turns to the mind. The world wants to shape Christians like Jell-O, fitting them into a mold that feels safe, popular, and agreeable. God’s Word calls believers away from that mold and into transformation. The renewing of the mind means allowing Scripture to challenge inherited opinions, personal experiences, cultural habits, and assumptions about life. Spiritual growth does not stop when someone has learned enough church language. God continues changing His people so they can see missions, money, time, prayer, and gospel work from His perspective.
Paul’s warning in verse 3 exposes the trap waiting near spiritual growth: pride. Pride can say, “I am the greatest, smartest, or most spiritual person here.” Pride can also say, “I am worthless, unlovable, and of no value to God.” Both lies keep the eyes fixed on self rather than Jesus. Christ settled human value by paying the price of His own life. The cross declares that sinners are deeply loved, while Romans 11:36 declares that every good work still belongs to God.
Paul therefore calls for sober thinking. God changes lives, pushes people out of comfort zones, and does amazing things through surrendered servants, not because they are “all that,” but because He is all that. The call to missions remains simple and searching: present the body, renew the mind, tear down pride, and let Christ receive the glory.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Surrender begins with a daily offering Romans 12 does not treat surrender as a one-time emotional moment. Paul calls believers to present their bodies as living sacrifices each day, placing ordinary actions, abilities, time, and strength under God’s authority. Missions involvement becomes real when giving, praying, serving, or going flows from that daily surrender. [42:25]
- 2. God’s Word must reshape the mind The world offers a mold for what a Christian should look like, say, and value. Scripture breaks that mold by exposing perspectives that feel normal but do not please God. A renewed mind learns to see money, ministry, missionaries, and the spread of the gospel through God’s expectations rather than the world’s. [48:52]
- 3. Pride wears more than one face Pride can boast about spiritual progress, but it can also insist that God could never love someone so broken or weak. Both responses make self the center of attention. The cross gives a truer verdict: Christ loved sinners enough to pay the greatest possible price for them. [55:38]
- 4. Christ alone gets the glory God works through humble human beings and does amazing things in lives and ministries. Any real spiritual change, faithful service, or useful labor comes of Him, through Him, and to Him. Sober-minded believers can serve boldly without either self-exaltation or self-contempt. [51:35]
