Day 1: The False Victory of Self-Sufficiency
Self-confidence is a valuable trait in many areas of life, encouraging us to persevere and overcome challenges. Yet, when it comes to our spiritual journey, an over-reliance on our own strength can be our greatest weakness. The disciples were utterly confident in their own ability to stand with Jesus, only to fail when the moment of true crisis arrived. Their self-assurance melted away because it was not rooted in a deeper dependence on God. This reveals that what often feels like strength can actually be a path to defeat. True spiritual resilience is found not in ourselves, but in God.[10:34]
“Jesus said to them, ‘You will all fall away because of me this night. For it is written, “I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.” But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.’ Peter answered him, ‘Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.’ Peter said to him, ‘Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!’ And all the disciples said the same.” (Matthew 26:31-35, ESV)
Reflection: Where in your life are you operating with a self-confidence that resembles Peter’s, saying “I will never…” or “I can handle this…”? What might it look like to exchange that self-reliance for a prayerful dependence on God’s strength in that specific area?
