Matthew 14 opens with Jesus sending the disciples into a boat while He goes up the mountain to pray. Jesus is not distant from their struggle. While the disciples fight the wind and waves through the night, Jesus is making plans, thinking, seeking, and actively engaging with the world they are living in. God is not a watchmaker who winds up a life and watches from far away. God wants to come down the mountain and be richly involved, moving, shifting, leading, and guiding people into purpose.
The boat pictures a life built on personal plans, effort, skills, and ability. The disciples are skilled fishermen, but their skill cannot get them to the other side when the wind is against them. A Jesus incorporated life tries to bring Jesus into personal desires and asks Him to make those desires work. A Jesus surrendered life asks a different question: “Jesus, where are You? Because I want to be where You are.”
Jesus comes toward the disciples in the storm, walking on the water, and at first they think He is a ghost. The unexpected appearance of Christ can feel frightening because His plans do not always look familiar or safe. Yet Jesus says, “Have courage. It is I. Don’t be afraid.” His drawing reaches people in their weariness, purposelessness, pain, and questions. His invitation waits for a response.
Peter gives the response that changes everything: “Lord, if it’s You, command me to come to You on the water.” Peter does not merely ask Jesus to get into his boat. Peter wants to leave the boat and go toward Jesus. That is surrender. That is abandoning the demand to understand every step and choosing to follow the One who calls.
Peter walks on water while his eyes are on Jesus, but fear rises when his attention turns to the strength of the wind. Jesus reaches out immediately when Peter cries, “Save me.” The boat may feel safer because it is familiar, but there is more danger in a boat without Jesus than on the water with Jesus. Christ sustains the life He calls a person into, and He catches those who begin to sink.
Jesus enters the boat, the wind ceases, and the disciples worship: “Truly You are the Son of God.” The same boat becomes different because Jesus is now in it. Christ calls every life beyond a square peg, round hole Christianity and into the freedom of full surrender, living worship, and trust in His good plan.

Key Takeaways
- 1. God has plans in the storm God remains active when life feels battered by wind and waves. Jesus prays on the mountain while the disciples struggle below, showing that hardship does not mean heaven has stopped paying attention. His plans are already at work before a person can see how deliverance will come. [58:40]
- 2. Jesus incorporated is not surrender A life can use Christian language while still keeping personal plans at the center. Jesus does not exist to reinforce idols, ambitions, or self-directed control. Surrender begins when Christ is no longer asked to fit the mold, but is trusted to reshape the whole life. [60:49]
- 3. Go where Jesus is Peter’s faith begins with a simple desire to be where Jesus is. The call is not to master every detail of the future, but to move toward Christ when He says, “Come.” Purpose becomes clear in the place of obedience, often one step at a time. [69:35]
- 4. Keep eyes fixed on Jesus The wind becomes overwhelming when Peter shifts his gaze from Jesus to the storm. Faith does not deny the reality of danger, but it refuses to let danger become greater than Christ. Jesus remains close enough to catch the one who cries out for help. [74:40]
- 5. The safest place is surrender The boat feels secure because it is familiar, predictable, and built around personal ability. Christ reveals that walking on water with Him is safer than staying in control without Him. His presence changes the very place that once felt battered and directionless.
