First John 5:14-15 gives the church a strong and beautiful word, “This is the confidence” that God’s children have when they approach the Father. John is not talking about arrogance, as if God owes somebody something. John is talking about the confidence of relationship, the boldness of a child who knows the Father loves, hears, and welcomes.
Acts 9 shows how that kind of life begins. Saul had religious fervor, letters in his hand, authority behind him, and confidence in his own direction, but the risen Christ stopped him on the Damascus road. Saul did not negotiate with Jesus. Saul did not add Jesus to his agenda. Saul surrendered, and the man breathing threats became a man breathing prayer. Christian life begins not with self improvement, but with total surrender.
Surrender is not the end of the journey. Surrender is the doorway into deeper connection with God. When the Lord told Ananias to go to Saul, the sign of Saul’s new life was simple and powerful, “he is praying.” The self directed man became a God dependent man. The persecutor became a praying man.
Prayer, then, is not bending God’s will to human will. Prayer brings the heart into alignment with the Father’s will. Shallow prayer says, “God, do what I want.” Surrendered prayer says, “Father, teach me to accept what you want.” The Lord’s Prayer begins with the Father’s name, the Father’s kingdom, and the Father’s will before daily bread, forgiveness, and deliverance. True prayer reorders desires, softens pride, exposes motives, redirects steps, and connects the heart to the Father.
The image of an old radio makes the point plain. The station may be broadcasting, but if the receiver is not tuned, all that comes through is static. God is faithful, God is speaking through his Word, and God is present by his Holy Spirit, but worry, pride, resentment, hurry, sin, self will, and distraction fill the heart with static. Prayer tunes the heart to the Father’s heart.
The Father hears. That does not mean every desire is granted. A good father can say no, not yet, or give something better. The child may not understand the wisdom, but the Father remains trustworthy. Because Jesus has opened the door, God’s children do not come as strangers or outsiders. They come to a loving Father who is never too busy, never absent, and never unable to hear.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Confidence comes from belonging [45:02] John’s confidence is not the swagger of someone demanding a result from God. It is the freedom of a child who knows the relationship gives access. Christ opens the way to the Father, so prayer begins with belonging before it ever becomes asking. [45:02]
- 2. Surrender is finding life [49:08] Surrender can feel like loss when control has become a false safety. But biblical surrender does not diminish a person, it connects that person more deeply to the Father’s hands. Saul’s life shows that surrender does not erase purpose, it redirects purpose under the risen Christ. [49:08]
- 3. Prayer tunes the heart [57:33] The old radio image shows that the signal is not the problem when static fills the room. God remains faithful, present, and speaking, but the heart can become misaligned by worry, pride, hurry, and self will. Prayer is the holy adjustment that makes the soul attentive again. [57:33]
- 4. The Father truly hears [01:00:07] God’s hearing is not the same thing as granting every request. A good Father may say no, not now, or something better, and that answer still comes from wisdom and love. Faith learns to trust the Father’s ears even when the Father’s timing is hard to understand. [60:07]
- 5. Real prayer comes back online [01:04:17] A one bar spiritual life can keep functioning for a while, but it cannot stay healthy on yesterday’s grace and last month’s prayer. Real prayer is not polished performance, but honest return: “Father, I need you,” “Father, forgive me,” “Father, align my heart.” Back to basics means back to living connection.
