Genesis 28 meets Jacob in an ordinary place, not a sanctuary or some spectacular destination. Jacob is running from the mess he has made, tired enough to put his head on a rock, and trying to figure out where he belongs. God meets him there with a stairway between heaven and earth, angels ascending and descending, and a covenant promise that reaches back to Abraham and Isaac. God tells Jacob, “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go,” and that promise becomes the heartbeat of what it means to love everywhere.
God’s presence goes ahead of Jacob. God does not suddenly show up because Jacob finally noticed him. God is already at work, already moving, already present in places that look plain and ordinary. Jacob wakes up with the realization, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” That certain place becomes holy ground because Jacob becomes aware of the God who was already there.
The call to love everyone everywhere every day rests on that same truth. Everywhere believers go, God is there. Cars can become little chapels on the highway. Schools, cubicles, ball fields, restaurants, neighborhoods, hallways, and homes can become places of holy encounter. The question is not, “How do I bring God here?” God is not waiting to be summoned by the right songs, prayers, or religious routine. The better question is, “What is God already doing here, and how can His people join Him?”
God’s prevenient grace means that no place exists outside His reach. The earth is broken, but it is not abandoned to evil. God created it, God still claims it, and God will redeem and restore it. The church, therefore, cannot circle the wagons and retreat from the world. The church gathers in a building, but the church lives scattered across the city, carrying Christ’s hospitality into every place.
Love everywhere embraces the places where God is already at work. Hospitality without grumbling becomes a kingdom practice, whether at a table, in a concession stand, at work, or while praying with a stranger who needs help. Eternity begins here and now, and God’s people are called to bring a little bit of heaven into the places where their feet already stand. Every address is a mission field. Every ordinary place may be the place where someone discovers, “Surely the Lord is in this place.”

Key Takeaways
- 1. God is already there first. God’s presence is not triggered by human effort or religious atmosphere. Jacob discovers that God had been present in the wilderness before the dream, before the altar, and before Jacob understood anything. Faith begins to look different when believers enter each place expecting to find God already moving. [49:13]
- 2. Ordinary places can become holy ground. Jacob encounters God with a stone beneath his head, not in a polished sanctuary. God regularly meets people in restaurants, cars, schools, workplaces, and exhausted moments that appear spiritually unremarkable. Awareness of God’s presence turns “a certain place” into a sacred opportunity. [46:34]
- 3. The church lives scattered across the city. A church building is a gathering place, but it is not the only place where the church exists. God sends His people into neighborhoods, offices, schools, and communities as His visible, hospitable presence. The mission continues wherever believers return after Sunday. [55:22]
- 4. Hospitality joins God’s kingdom work. Hospitality is more than being friendly in a church lobby. Christ’s people open tables, offer prayer, notice pain, and show up in hard places because Christ has entrusted His embodied care to them. A willingness to be interrupted may reveal that God has already prepared a moment of grace. [56:57]
- 5. Every address carries kingdom purpose. God does not call His people merely to wait for a better place, a better season, or a more impressive assignment. Jeremiah’s call to seek the good of the city presses believers to grow where they are planted and serve the place they have been given. God may redeem a difficult space through the very person who feels stuck there.
