Bible ReadingPhilippians 4:4-9“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!”
[35:10]“Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near.”
[35:20]“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”
[35:26]“And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
[35:36]“Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.”
[35:47]“The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.”
[36:14]Matthew 14:28-31“Peter said to Him, ‘Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.’”
[59:35]“And He said, ‘Come!’ And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus.”
[59:46]“But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’”
[59:54]“Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and said to him, ‘You of little faith, why did you doubt?’”
[01:00:03]Acts 2:38“Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.’”
[01:08:40]Observation questions- What commands and promises are found together in Philippians 4:4-9? Notice especially what Paul tells believers to do with joy, gentleness, anxiety, prayer, thoughts, and practice. [35:10]
- What makes Paul’s call to rejoice especially striking when his situation and the struggles among the Philippian believers are considered? [36:50]
- In Philippians 4:6, what three parts are named as believers bring their concerns to God, and what does each part add to the response to anxiety? [48:35]
- In Peter’s experience on the water, what changed between the time he stepped out of the boat and the time he began to sink? [59:46]
Interpretation questions- Paul says to rejoice in the Lord, not rejoice in painful circumstances. How does that difference give a believer real reason for joy during loss, sickness, conflict, or financial pressure? [39:44]
- What does it mean for a believer’s gentleness to be “known to all men”? How can someone be gentle without pretending that wrong behavior is acceptable or allowing others to mistreat them? [01:06:06]
- Philippians 4 does not say that every hard thing will immediately disappear. What does it mean that God’s peace “will guard” a believer’s heart and mind in Christ Jesus? [55:19]
- Peter saw a real storm, yet he began to sink when his attention moved away from Jesus. How can a believer face real problems honestly without letting those problems become bigger in the mind than God’s faithfulness? [59:54]
Application questions- What is most likely to stir anxiety in your life right now—bad news, bills, family trouble, a diagnosis, uncertainty about the future, or something else? What would it look like to treat that anxious feeling like an “anxiety light” that turns you toward prayer? [49:41]
- When anxiety hits, what do you usually do first: scroll, rehearse worst-case situations, try to control everything, withdraw, or pray? What is one simple prayer you could begin praying in that moment? [50:01]
- Is there a request you have been carrying mostly by yourself? How could you bring it plainly to God this week through prayer, supplication, and thanksgiving? [50:43]
- What is one thing you can thank God for even while the situation you are facing remains hard? How does thanksgiving remind the heart that Jesus has opened the way into God’s presence? [52:49]
- Think about a recent moment when somebody frustrated you. What did your first reaction want to say or do? What could a gentle response have looked like while still being honest and firm? [45:01]
- What has been occupying your mind lately? What is one true, honorable, pure, lovely, or praiseworthy truth about God that you need to dwell on instead? [58:09]
- Where have you seen God’s faithfulness in a past storm or season of hurt? How can remembering that faithfulness help you stand strong in the present rather than merely trying to survive? [54:35]
