Bible ReadingJohn 15:1-11“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.”
[36:40]“Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.”
[37:01]“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”
[37:15]“If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.”
[37:24]“If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.”
[37:34]“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.”
[37:47]“These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.”
[38:56]Galatians 5:22-23“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”
[30:47]Philippians 4:10-12“I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity.”
[51:43]“Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.”
[52:03]“I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.”
[52:14]Observation questions- In John 15, what roles are given to Jesus, the Father, and believers in the picture of the vine, gardener, and branches? [36:40]
- What does Jesus say happens to a branch that remains in the vine, and what does he say a branch cannot do by itself?
- According to John 15:9-11, what are believers told to remain in, and what result does Jesus promise? [38:46]
- What kinds of circumstances were named as things that can drain joy, and what contrast was made between happiness and joy? [33:32]
Interpretation questions- Jesus connects abiding in his love, keeping his commandments, and receiving full joy. How do these fit together without making joy seem like something a believer earns? [42:10]
- The Father prunes branches that are already bearing fruit. What might it mean for a fruitful believer to go through a season that feels painful, limited, or unwanted? [48:27]
- Paul says he had learned contentment in both need and plenty. What does that suggest about how contentment and joy grow over time? [52:27]
- The same phrase can be seen as “God is nowhere” or “God is now here.” How can recognizing God’s presence change the way a believer walks through pain without pretending the pain is small? [01:03:31]
Application questions- What circumstance, responsibility, disappointment, or difficult relationship has been draining joy lately? What would it look like to bring that specific situation to Jesus as the true vine? [56:07]
- Is there a “when and then” statement shaping expectations right now—“When this changes, then I will be happy”? How has that way of thinking affected contentment in the present? [49:28]
- Is there an area where God may be pruning—an uncomfortable change, a closed door, a loss, or a needed correction? What fruit might God be seeking to grow through it? [48:38]
- What simple practice could help someone remain connected to Christ this week: opening Scripture each day, praying honestly, setting aside a regular time with God, or obeying something God has already made clear? [01:06:25]
- Is bitterness toward someone taking up space where joy could grow? What might be a wise and safe next step toward forgiveness, reconciliation, or releasing that burden to God? [01:06:50]
- Think of one hard circumstance. What evidence of God’s presence can still be seen in it, even if the reason for it is not clear? [01:04:03]
- Joy is rooted in Christ’s presence rather than in getting the desired outcome. What is one specific choice this week that could reflect trust in that truth? [01:08:43]
