Summer School Sessions: The Bible

The Bible stands as God’s revelation to his people, given out of his love so that life is not left to guesswork. Scripture is not merely a book that contains some words from God. Scripture, from Genesis through Revelation, is the word of God. Paul says all Scripture is God breathed, useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

The Bible came together in a way no ordinary book ever has. Sixty-six books, written across fifteen hundred years by forty different authors in different places and languages, still carry one consistent thread: God and man are being reconciled according to God’s plan through his Son, Jesus Christ. The Old Testament points forward to him, the Gospels reveal him, and the letters instruct his people until he comes back again.

The evidence for trusting Scripture is not blind or flimsy. Manuscript evidence shows that the Bible has not been changed over time, with thousands of copies that can be compared across the centuries. Archaeological evidence keeps uncovering names, places, rulers, boats, events, and records that line up with the biblical account. Historical evidence outside the Bible supports the same world Scripture describes. Prophetic evidence is even stronger, because Scripture gives precise details hundreds of years before fulfillment, especially around Jesus’ suffering, death, and resurrection. Eyewitness evidence matters too, because those who saw and heard these things gave detailed testimony and did not change their story, even under threat of death. Life-change evidence also shows the power of Scripture, because God uses it to make a person new in Christ.

The Bible trains God’s people for the good work he has prepared. God already knows human shortcomings, failures, and even “stupidity,” and his calling takes those limits into account. Scripture teaches, rebukes, corrects, and trains because a loving Father tells the truth, even when the truth is hard to hear. Correction is not cruelty. Correction is love that keeps a child from playing in the road.

God’s word also lights the way. Psalm 119 calls it a lamp for the feet and a light on the path. Scripture may not show every mile down the road, but it gives enough light for the next right step. Jesus himself answered temptation with, “It is written,” showing that Scripture is the dependable guide when a wrong step would be costly. James then presses the final issue: God’s word must not merely be heard. God’s word must be humbly accepted and done.
