Summer in the Psalms - Psalm 1

Psalm one stands at the gateway of the Psalms and sets the choice right at the front: there are two paths, not three, not ten, not a customized version of faith. The psalm lays out the way of the righteous and the way of the wicked, and each path leads somewhere. The image is simple and strong: one life becomes a tree planted by streams of water, and the other becomes chaff blown away by the wind.

The word “blessed” does not mean a cute, perfect, happy little life. The Hebrew word points to flourishing, wholeness, and life lived the way God designed it. The psalm begins with an invitation to choose the path that leads to that kind of life. Every habit, relationship, thought, and voice is taking a person somewhere, and even not making a decision is still making a decision.

The psalmist shows the slow drift of compromise with three words: walk, stand, sit. Sin usually does not ask someone to move in on the first date. Sin asks someone to hang around a little bit, to linger, then to pull up a chair. Eve listened before she reached, and Lot looked toward Sodom before he lived inside it. Proximity shapes people, because whatever is closest often becomes what a person is most like.

Verse two turns from the voices to avoid toward the voice that should shape the rooted life. The rooted person delights in the law of the Lord, not as cold rules, but as God’s loving instruction, guidance, and direction. Biblical meditation is not emptying the mind. Biblical meditation is filling the mind with truth until it fills the whole person. Worry often becomes a twisted kind of meditation, but Scripture trains the mind to think on what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and praiseworthy.

The tree in verse three is planted on purpose by streams of water. God does not accidentally place his people. The rooted life is sustained by a constant source, not yesterday’s rain or last year’s encounter. Fruit comes after roots, and fruit comes “in its season,” in its appointed time. God does not promise constant fruit, but timely fruit. Fast faith wants instant results, but God refuses to microwave what he intends to mature.

The final image, chaff, shows the danger of a rootless life. Chaff moves, but it has no control over where it goes. The rooted life has weight, substance, lasting fruit, and most of all the presence of God. The Lord watches over the way of the righteous, not from a distance, but with intimate knowledge, faithful care, and personal involvement.
