Bible ReadingMatthew 5:31-48 “It was also said, 'Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.' But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.' But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let what you say be simply 'Yes' or 'No'; anything more than this comes from evil. You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you. You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”
[12:40]Matthew 19:3-9 “And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, 'Is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?' He answered, 'Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, 'Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.' They said to him, 'Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?' He said to them, 'Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.'”
[15:21]Romans 12:19 “Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, 'Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.'”
[36:19]Romans 5:10 “For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.”
[39:32]Observation questions- In Matthew 5:31-48, what four relationship areas does Jesus move through, and what does he say about each one? [09:16]
- According to Matthew 19:3-9, what question do the Pharisees ask Jesus about divorce, and where does Jesus take them in response? [15:21]
- In Matthew 5:33-37, what kinds of oaths does Jesus mention, and what simple alternative does he give instead? [24:39]
- In Matthew 5:38-48, what examples does Jesus give of refusing retaliation and loving beyond what is deserved? [31:21]
Interpretation questions- Jesus keeps moving past outward behavior and into the heart. What does that show about how he defines righteousness in relationships? [11:48]
- In Matthew 19, Jesus answers a divorce question by going back to creation and speaking about hard hearts. Why does that matter for understanding what he is really confronting? [16:07]
- Jesus says, “Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No.’” What would it look like for a person’s character to make extra promises unnecessary? [27:23]
- Jesus does not erase justice, but he does call people to release personal revenge to God. How is that different from pretending no wrong was done or allowing evil without boundaries? [36:01]
Application questions- Pressure reveals what is already living underneath the surface. When frustration, offense, or disappointment shows up, what tends to come out of the heart most quickly right now? [08:30]
- Covenant love refuses to look for loopholes. In which relationship is there a temptation to ask, “How can I get out of this?” instead of, “How can this be honored faithfully?” [14:45]
- Integrity makes words believable. Where is it hardest right now to let “yes” mean yes and “no” mean no—at home, at work, with friends, or in church? What would change if words consistently matched reality there? [28:29]
- Trust is built one conversation at a time. Is there a promise left unkept, a vague answer given, or a hard truth avoided that needs to be addressed honestly this week? [28:18]
- Grace releases revenge to God. Is there a hurt that keeps replaying in the mind, or a person who is being mentally punished over and over? What would it look like to entrust that situation to the Lord instead of carrying out personal revenge? [36:19]
- Enemy love seeks another person’s good rather than harm. Who is difficult to love right now, and what might prayer for that person look like without pretending the wrong was acceptable? [38:00]
- Christ loved enemies while they were still enemies. How does remembering personal reconciliation with God change the way wounded people are viewed and treated? [39:32]
