The study of foundational doctrine moves from knowing what Scripture says to living the life Scripture calls for. Head knowledge can be full while the heart stays untouched, so Christian living must show that belief has been translated into a life being shaped into the image of Jesus Christ.

Christianity sometimes gets marketed like a dressed-up job posting, with all the attractive benefits pushed to the front. Scripture does not do that. Jesus gives no bait and switch. Jesus tells the truth about the blessing and the cost, the joy and the struggle, the life and the dying that come with following him.

Jesus sets the requirements for being a disciple, and those requirements do not get rewritten by culture, the church, or personal preference. Self denial stands first in the job description. Peter calls followers of Jesus “foreigners and exiles” and urges them to abstain from sinful desires because those desires “wage war against the soul.” Jesus is not blocking good things. Jesus is warning against what destroys.

Sacrifice comes next. Luke 9 lets Jesus say it plainly: whoever wants to be his disciple must deny self, take up the cross daily, and follow him. Jesus is not trying to put up blockades to keep you from things that would be fun and exciting and good for you, not at all. He says they wage war against your soul. That's why Jesus says, abstain from sinful desires. You see, this Jesus loves us enough to tell us the truth about the things that would hurt us and he calls us to turn from those things to the things that would bless us instead.”

“Denying self is essential if you're gonna be willing to sacrifice yourself. You can't be first anymore if you're gonna be a follower of Jesus. Who's gonna have to be first now? Jesus is. That's the choice we're making when we decide to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. Because he says, if you try to save your life, hold on to your own life, it's gonna kill you. It's gonna destroy you. The cross is all about laying down that life and starting a new one, having a different one. Quit trying to hold on to the old one. That one leads to death and destruction. Lay it down, crucify it, bury it, and leave it there and rise up to the new one that he's calling you to take up. It's a better life in so many ways, but it requires that willingness to make that sacrifice.”
