The Struggle is Real | Part Three

The struggle is real when somebody looks at God and says, “I mean it this time,” only to end up doing the same thing again. The same anger, habit, bitterness, addiction, unhealthy relationship, or attitude can come roaring back when pressure shows up, buttons get pushed, or loneliness, exhaustion, and discouragement settle in. Shame then starts talking: “What is wrong with me? If I really loved God, wouldn’t I be past this now?”

Paul gives words to that frustration in Romans 7. Romans 6 says sin no longer has to be master through Jesus, and Romans 8 says the Holy Spirit gives power to live differently. Romans 7 sits right in the middle and shows what happens when somebody knows what God says but tries to obey Him in their own strength.

Paul says, “I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing that I hate.” His heart knows what is right, his mind agrees with God, and yet sin keeps pulling in the opposite direction. The battle shows up when one part says, “Honor God,” while another part says, “I want what I want right now.” The battle shows up when truth fights self-protection, forgiveness fights revenge, walking away fights “just one more time.”

God’s law is not the problem. God’s law reveals His holy, loving, truthful, and just character; it shows how He created people to live; and it exposes the sin within. The law works like a mirror: it can show a dirty face, but it cannot wash it. Only Jesus can forgive sin, cleanse sin, break sin’s power, and give new life.

Sin is more than one bad choice. Sin is a power working in fallen human nature, which means good intentions, bigger promises, and trying harder are not enough. Paul finally reaches the end of himself and cries, “Who will deliver me from this body of death?” Christ answers that cry. Jesus is not another rule or religious activity. Jesus is the Rescuer.

Romans 8 brings the good news: “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Failure does not get to define a believer. The worst moment does not get to name a believer. The struggle does not have to be the end of the story, because Christ gives the Holy Spirit and calls His people into freedom.

The practical path is simple: name it, starve it, surrender it. Honesty names the struggle without excuses. Wisdom starves the struggle by cutting off access, triggers, patterns, and secret places. Grace surrenders the struggle to Jesus and brings in mat carriers who love enough to pray, ask hard questions, and walk toward freedom.
