Strengthening Faith Through Communion and Conviction
Devotional
Day 1: Communion as a Heartfelt Reflection
Communion is a sacred act that requires introspection and a right relationship with God. It is not a mere ritual but a profound moment to reflect on Christ's sacrifice and our connection with Him. We are called to examine our hearts and confess our sins, trusting in God's faithfulness to forgive and cleanse us. This act of communion is a reminder of the deep relationship we are invited to have with Christ, one that goes beyond tradition and touches the core of our faith. As we partake, we are encouraged to look inward, ensuring that our hearts are aligned with God's will and that we are not simply following the motions. [20:24]
1 Corinthians 11:28-29 (ESV): "Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself."
Reflection: As you prepare for your next communion, what specific areas of your life need introspection and confession before God?
Day 2: Conviction in the Face of Adversity
Bold actions stem from strong convictions. Like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, we are called to stand firm in our faith, even when faced with adversity. Our convictions should be rooted in God's truth, empowering us to live out our beliefs courageously. These three men demonstrated that true conviction is not just about belief but about living out that belief, even in the face of life-threatening challenges. Their story is a powerful reminder that God is with us, providing strength and deliverance when we stand firm in our faith. [38:38]
Daniel 3:17-18 (ESV): "If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up."
Reflection: What is one area in your life where you need to stand firm in your convictions despite external pressures?
Day 3: Faithfulness Amidst Societal Pressure
Jesus' unwavering conviction before Pilate teaches us to remain faithful to God's will, regardless of societal pressures. Our actions should be grounded in a personal relationship with God, not merely following traditions or the crowd. Jesus, despite immense pressure, remained faithful to God's will, showing us that our convictions should be rooted in God's truth. This is a call for us to understand why we do what we do in our faith, ensuring our actions are grounded in a personal relationship with God rather than mere tradition. [44:49]
John 18:37 (ESV): "Then Pilate said to him, 'So you are a king?' Jesus answered, 'You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.'"
Reflection: In what ways can you ensure that your actions are rooted in a personal relationship with God rather than societal expectations?
Day 4: Strength in God's Presence
In moments of intimidation or pressure, we can draw strength from knowing God is with us. Like David facing Goliath, we are equipped to confront our fears with confidence, trusting in God's presence and power. Our identity is rooted in Christ, not in the approval of the world, and this truth empowers us to live boldly for Him. This assurance allows us to face challenges with courage, knowing that God has prepared us for these moments and is with us every step of the way. [56:17]
1 Samuel 17:45 (ESV): "Then David said to the Philistine, 'You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.'"
Reflection: What is one fear or challenge you are currently facing, and how can you rely on God's presence to confront it?
Day 5: Embracing Challenges with Faith
Our identity is rooted in Christ, not in the approval of the world. This truth empowers us to live boldly for Him, embracing challenges as opportunities to deepen our trust in God and stand firm in our convictions. As we navigate through life's trials, we are reminded that our worth and identity are found in Christ alone. This understanding frees us from the need for worldly approval and allows us to embrace challenges with faith, knowing that they are opportunities to grow closer to God and strengthen our convictions. [01:07:57]
Colossians 3:3-4 (ESV): "For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory."
Reflection: How can you shift your focus from seeking approval from others to finding your identity in Christ alone?
Sermon Summary
In today's gathering, we focused on the profound significance of communion and the strength of conviction in our faith journey. Communion is not just a ritual; it is a moment to reflect deeply on our relationship with Christ and the sacrifice He made for us. As we partake, we are reminded to examine our hearts, ensuring we are in right standing with God, not merely following the crowd. This introspection is crucial as it aligns with the teachings of 1 John 1:9, which assures us of God's faithfulness in forgiving our sins when we confess them.
We also explored the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego from Daniel 3, highlighting how bold actions are inspired by strong convictions. These three men stood firm in their faith despite facing a fiery furnace, demonstrating that true conviction is not just about belief but about living out that belief, even in the face of adversity. Their story encourages us to stand firm in our faith, knowing that God is with us, providing strength and deliverance.
The narrative of Jesus before Pilate further illustrates unwavering conviction. Jesus, despite immense pressure, remained faithful to God's will, showing us that our convictions should be rooted in God's truth, not swayed by societal pressures or expectations. This is a call for us to understand why we do what we do in our faith, ensuring our actions are grounded in a personal relationship with God rather than mere tradition.
In our daily lives, we face numerous challenges that test our faith and convictions. Whether it's societal pressures or personal trials, we are reminded that God is with us, equipping us with the strength to stand firm. Like David facing Goliath, we can confront our fears with confidence, knowing that God has prepared us for these moments. Our identity is rooted in Christ, not in the approval of the world, and this truth empowers us to live boldly for Him.

So we don't necessarily rush through communion. We want to take time to think about what we're doing and why we're doing it. We want to take time to make sure we are in right relationship with Christ and not just take it because the crowd is taking it. [00:17:01]
Heavenly Father, You know what is happening in the hearts of all of Your people in the room today. Lord, You know what is happening in the hearts of those who are online and weren't able to make it. Those who are sitting in traffic still on their way. Those who felt like they couldn't get up this morning and maybe just say, You know what, I just can't do it today. But Lord, You know what's happening in the hearts of Your people. [00:17:44]
See, faith demands action in the face of adversity. Like James said, faith without action is dead. And we have to show that by showing our faith in adversity, we demonstrate that a genuine commitment to God often comes with significant challenges. But it also comes with remarkable deliverance. [00:41:03]
This reminds me of Jesus standing before Pilate, something we'll, you know, have for a devotional reading here in a couple weeks. Jesus stands before Pilate and he was not ashamed to follow God's will. His convictions did not come from the crowd or the pressure of the governor. [00:45:35]
See, as we navigate public life, especially in today's age, we have so many complex issues that people feel passionately about. You may feel the push to conform to popular opinions. This is why when we did communion, I don't want everyone to just grab a cup and eat and drink. I want you to think about why you're doing it, not just because the crowd is doing it. [00:47:49]
See, you have to be immersed in God's word and know God for yourself on your faith. Your faith can't be dependent on mine. Your faith can't be dependent on your mom's, grandma, pops. It's yours. Because when you have to stand firm, when you have to stand firm on conviction, you can't stand on the firm on the conviction of those who passed away. [00:50:53]
If you feel intimidated by someone at work or pressure of your job to conform, maybe they're saying, if you don't do this, or if you don't give this up, then, you know, you're going to be fired. Know that God is with you in those moments. He is faithful. [00:57:03]
When you feel intimidated in public, whether at some kind of community event, or on social media, or whatever that may be, remember, God is with you. Pray, pray for strength, because he is the one who is going to give you the conviction. He is the one who's going to give you the power to stand firm. [00:57:41]
David drew his courage from knowing that God was with him. He didn't want to put on all that armor and everything else. He said, man, I can't wear all of this. That's not what actually protects me. That's not what actually strengthens me. That's all just for show. Take that off of me. [01:07:20]
And see, as we reflect on all of these realities, let's apply them daily. Let's consider them daily. Don't forget when you leave here today and on Tuesday when you're facing a challenge, just break down. God is with you on Tuesdays too. Ain't that good news? Jesus, embrace every challenge as an opportunity to trust deeply in God. Boldly claim his strength as your own. [01:08:42]
So let us grow in our convictions about who you are. Let us grow about our convictions of what you have left behind in the Holy Spirit and in your church. Let us be convicted about the passion and the purpose that you have given us through your calling. [01:09:20]
So, Lord, as we enter into the rest of this week and as we go in the days ahead, just strengthen us, Lord. Help us to see clearly how we could be more like you, how we could trust you deeper. And, Lord, give us opportunities that we might share our convictions about who you are through your word with those around us. [01:10:09]
