Strengthened by Grace Through the Unchanging Christ

Hebrews brings its great argument to a close with a very practical question: how can the heart be strengthened by grace in troubled times? Jesus is better. He is superior to prophets, angels, Moses, Aaron, the old priesthood, and every sacrifice that could never finally take away sin. Hebrews 13:8 gives the foundation: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Christ is immutable. He does not change in his being, his character, or his purposes.

Christ does not improve or deteriorate. His mercy does not run out, his love does not diminish, and his justice never becomes unjust. God does not receive new information, face an unforeseen development, or revise a plan because something caught him off guard. His counsel shall stand, and he will accomplish all his purpose. Christ’s unchangeableness becomes an anchor in a changing world and for a changing heart. His promises can be trusted because his character stands behind every promise.

Hebrews then points to what Christ has done outside the gate. The Day of Atonement gave Israel a picture of sin being dealt with, covered, and carried away outside the camp. The blood entered the holy place, while the body of the sacrifice was burned outside the camp. Jesus fulfilled that picture completely. Christ suffered outside the gate, shed his own blood, bore the reproach of his people, and sanctified them through the once-for-all sacrifice of himself.

The altar is no longer found in the temple rituals. Christ himself is the altar, the sacrifice, and the true provision for sinners. The blood of bulls and goats could not take away sin, but the blood of Christ makes propitiation and brings forgiveness. Communion therefore points believers spiritually to the sacrifice that the old priests could never eat, possess, or repeat.

Hebrews also directs the eyes of God’s people toward a lasting city. Earth has no lasting city, but Christ has promised a place prepared in the Father’s house. Heaven is a real, eternal place of rest, joy, worship, and inheritance for all who trust Christ. The heart strengthened by grace knows who Jesus is, remembers what he has done, and rests in what he has promised.

False teaching, empty rituals, and the pull of the world still threaten to lead hearts astray. Grace does not come because religious activity has been performed. Worship, prayer, Scripture, sacraments, and obedience are means of grace only because God blesses them by his Spirit. Christ calls his people to turn their eyes upon him until the things of earth grow strangely dim.
