Strengthened by Grace: Entrusting the Faith to Others
Devotional
Day 1: Divine Strength for a Sacred Mission
The strength needed to fulfill our mission as Christians is not derived from self-reliance but from the grace found in Christ Jesus. This divine enablement empowers us to pass on the teachings of the faith to others. It requires us to be diligent thinkers and to rely on God's supernatural intervention. The grace of God is essential for overcoming spiritual resistance and enduring the challenges that come with sharing the gospel. This strength is not just for personal edification but is crucial for the task of entrusting the teachings of the faith to others. [00:59]
2 Corinthians 12:9-10 (ESV): "But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong."
Reflection: In what areas of your life do you need to rely more on God's grace rather than your own strength? How can you begin to make that shift today?
Day 2: Guarding the Good Deposit
The "pattern of sound words" or "good deposit" is a unified body of teaching that encapsulates the Christian faith. It is our responsibility to guard and pass this teaching to faithful individuals who can teach others, ensuring its continuity across generations. This task requires discernment and dedication, as the teachings are not merely doctrines but a comprehensive message that embodies the essence of the Christian faith. By faithfully transmitting this "good deposit," we contribute to the preservation and propagation of the gospel. [04:13]
2 Timothy 1:13-14 (ESV): "Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you."
Reflection: Who in your life can you intentionally invest in to pass on the teachings of the faith? What steps can you take this week to begin that process?
Day 3: Spiritual Discernment in Teaching
The natural person cannot accept the things of the Spirit of God, as they are spiritually discerned. This highlights the necessity of the Holy Spirit's work in both the teacher and the learner, making the task of teaching a spiritual endeavor that requires divine assistance. Without the intervention of the Holy Spirit, spiritual truths appear as foolishness to the unregenerate mind. Therefore, both the teacher and the learner must rely on the Holy Spirit for understanding and transformation. [08:28]
1 Corinthians 2:12-14 (ESV): "Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned."
Reflection: How can you invite the Holy Spirit to guide your understanding and teaching of spiritual truths today? What practical steps can you take to be more receptive to His guidance?
Day 4: Embracing Suffering in the Mission
Suffering is an inevitable part of the mission to entrust the teachings of the faith to others. This suffering can manifest in various forms, from relational disruptions to severe persecution, and requires supernatural strength to endure. As good soldiers of Christ, we are called to share in this suffering, understanding that it is part of the journey of faith. Embracing suffering with grace and perseverance is a testament to our commitment to the mission and our reliance on God's strength. [09:34]
1 Peter 4:12-14 (ESV): "Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you."
Reflection: What forms of suffering have you experienced in your journey of faith? How can you embrace these challenges as opportunities to grow closer to Christ and rely on His strength?
Day 5: Perseverance, Discipline, and Hard Work
The metaphors of a soldier, athlete, and farmer illustrate the perseverance, discipline, and hard work required in the Christian life. Each metaphor provides insight into the nature of our calling and the promises that accompany faithful service. As soldiers, we endure hardship; as athletes, we compete according to the rules; and as farmers, we work diligently for the harvest. These images remind us of the dedication and effort needed to fulfill our mission and the rewards that come from faithful service. [10:07]
2 Timothy 2:3-6 (ESV): "Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops."
Reflection: Which metaphor—soldier, athlete, or farmer—resonates most with your current spiritual journey? How can you apply the lessons from that metaphor to your daily walk with Christ?
Sermon Summary
In our exploration of 2 Timothy 2:1-7, we delve into the profound necessity of being strengthened by the grace found in Christ Jesus. This strength is not merely for personal edification but is crucial for the task of entrusting the teachings of the faith to others. The passage emphasizes the importance of passing on the "pattern of sound words," a body of teaching that has been entrusted to us, which Paul refers to as the "good deposit." This teaching is not just a collection of doctrines but a comprehensive, unified message that encapsulates the essence of the Christian faith.
The process of entrusting this teaching to others is not a simple task. It requires supernatural strength because the natural person, as described in 1 Corinthians 2:13-14, does not accept the things of the Spirit of God. These truths are spiritually discerned, and without the intervention of the Holy Spirit, they appear as foolishness to the unregenerate mind. Therefore, we need the grace of God to empower us in this mission, as it involves overcoming spiritual resistance and enduring suffering.
Suffering is an inherent part of this mission, as Paul indicates by urging us to share in suffering as good soldiers of Christ. This suffering can range from relational disruptions to severe persecution. The call to be strengthened by grace is a call to embrace this suffering with the understanding that it is part of the journey of faith. As we look forward to the next session, we will explore how being like a soldier, an athlete, and a farmer can provide us with the necessary perspective and promise to endure and succeed in this mission.

Sermon Clips
if you believe in the supernatural intervention of God in your life that he gives you understanding don't ever ever let that keep you from being a hard thinker about biblical truth and if you believe in hard thinking about biblical truth don't ever let that lead you to think that you are self-reliant and that you don't need the gift of understanding [00:00:51]
you then my child be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus and we ask what kind of strength is this how does grace work what is Grace and how does it produce strength and how is Grace in Christ Jesus that was session number two and now we move to session number three in which the question I have is why do you need strength to do this or more specifically what is it that you need to be strengthened for in this text [00:01:20]
the main answer to the question what do you need strength for you need strength for the work of entrusting what you heard to faithful men so let's let's ask okay why do you need supernatural strength for that and to answer that we probably should ask we probably should ask what are you entrusting it says what you have heard that's the first answer so answer number one what you have heard from me I have delivered to you [00:02:37]
follow the pattern of sound words so there's a name given to what has been entrusted to me it's called a pattern of sound words that you have heard from me in faith and love that are in Christ Jesus by the Holy Spirit who dwells within us guard the good deposit and that were deposit you can't see it in English but in Greek is related to this word and Trust but in English it's very plain we've got a name for it here [00:03:41]
this trust that he is passing along to faithful men is a body of teaching that has a certain unity and totality to it summing up the healthy in a healthy way the teachings of the Bible and before I ask the next question notice the four generations here here's in chapter 1 verse 12 Paul himself has been entrusted with something so there's somebody before Paul let's just say Jesus who comes to Paul and says I've got a message for you [00:05:30]
Christians embrace the healthy teaching of Scripture and they pass it along to faithful people who pass along generation after generation last question why do we need to be strengthened supernaturally by grace that is in Christ in order to do this this is not strengthened with protein in some physical way this is strengthened by grace God's glorious commitment to us and powerful action in us because of Christ that enables us to do this [00:06:51]
we impart this this wisdom this body of teaching I think in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the spirit interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual the natural person this is what we're up against the person as we are by our first birth without the new birth we're just natural ordinary fallen sinful rebellious people the natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God [00:07:57]
so my first answer to the question why do you need white need spiritual strength to do this work of entrusting to men is because without the supernatural work of God in those men and through the teaching there's going to be resistance and that leads to the last thing that is the transition to next time verse 3 share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ so suffering seems to be baked in to this effort [00:09:00]
we need supernatural strength by grace in Christ to do a faithful job of passing this along from generation to generation because natural men don't receive it and it's going to bring suffering into our lives which leads us now next time to say ok what's that going to involve and he says it's going to involve being like a soldier it's going to involve being like an athlete and it's going to involve being like a farmer [00:09:43]
the natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God so the things that need to be taught they simply are going to accept them for they are foolishness to him he's not able it's not just a will knob it is cannot he is so opposed to God that he is not morally able to love and embrace what's being presented he's not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned [00:08:28]
suffering seems to be baked in to this effort to entrust to faithful men it might be something mild like disruption of relationships when you teach the truth or it might be something severe like jail or murder we need supernatural strength by grace in Christ to do a faithful job of passing this along from generation to generation because natural men don't receive it and it's going to bring suffering into our lives [00:09:34]
this is not strengthened with protein in some physical way this is strengthened by grace God's glorious commitment to us and powerful action in us because of Christ that enables us to do this why why do we need that he's not saying well you can do this no problem just go about it no he's saying you need supernatural grace strength and then it seems to me that there are at least two reasons [00:07:21]
