The mirror reveals not just ability but accountability—how faithfully we steward what’s borrowed. Natural skills and spiritual gifts alike demand sober self-assessment. To ask “What kind of steward am I?” is to confront complacency and ignite purpose. True stewardship begins when we stop comparing ourselves to others and start answering to the One who gifted us. “For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.” (Romans 12:3, ESV)

Sermon Summary

Paul’s picture of one body with many members grounds the call to stewardship of talents. The body of Christ does not need every member to do the same thing, because God gives different functions, different natural abilities, different spiritual gifts, and different life experiences. Every gift is meant to be recognized, thanked God for, and offered back to the church and the world. Talent is not supposed to sit on a shelf.

Faithfulness becomes the standard for stewardship. God’s gifts do not make anybody self-made, because everything, from life and health to intellect and ability, comes from His hand. Everybody may possess a natural ability, whether cooking, teaching, organizing, encouraging, playing sports, or building something with their hands. Right relationship with God through Jesus Christ turns a life from merely gifted into a life available for God’s service. Salvation brings forgiveness, but it also brings the privilege of being used by God.

The stewardship of talent does not end because somebody reaches the fourth quarter, overtime, or even double overtime. God can still use a person in a nursing home, in a wheelchair, or in any season where strength looks different than it once did. The fact that a person is still here means God still has something for that person to do. Prayer becomes the right response for anyone unsure of a gift: ask God to reveal the talent, passion, skill, knowledge, or expertise He has given, then ask how it can bless somebody else and bring Him praise, honor, and glory.
