Day 1: Bags of Gold and Dug Holes
The master handed five bags of gold to one servant, two to another, and one to the third. Each received according to their ability. The first two traded boldly, doubling their amounts. The third dug a hole, burying his master’s money. When the master returned, he praised the risk-takers: “Well done, good and faithful servant.” But he rebuked the one who hid the gold, calling him wicked and lazy. The master’s joy came not from the profit itself, but from their willingness to work with what they’d been given. [24:16]
Jesus rewards faithfulness, not results. The servants with five and two bags received identical praise because both maximized their entrusted resources. The buried talent revealed a heart of fear, not lack of skill. God measures stewardship by obedience, not earthly outcomes.
You’ve been given time, skills, and resources unique to your capacity. What have you buried under excuses or fear? Identify one area you’ve neglected—a gift, relationship, or opportunity—and put it to work this week. Where does your hesitation reveal a distorted view of God’s character?
“For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away.”
(Matthew 25:14-15, ESV)
Prayer: Ask God to reveal where you’ve hidden His gifts instead of investing them.
Challenge: Write down three specific resources you possess (time, skill, money) and commit to using one today.
