Stewardship of the Heart - (Clay County)

Jesus’ parable of the sower starts with dirt because stewardship always starts below the surface. The packed lane beside a field receives the same rain, sun, and seed as the rest of the ground, but nothing grows because the ground has been driven on until it is closed. The human heart can get that way too, not always through one huge decision to shut God out, but through a thousand small passes of disappointment, busyness, unprayed hurt, and sin’s deceitfulness.

Matthew places this parable on a hard day in Jesus’ ministry. John the Baptist is wrestling with doubt, the Pharisees are plotting murder, religious leaders are calling Jesus’ power demonic, and even Jesus’ family is standing outside the house. Jesus sits by the Sea of Galilee before a huge crowd made up of disciples who are hungry, Pharisees who are hostile, and people who are curious but undecided. Jesus tells a story about a farmer scattering seed, and the story reveals the condition of every heart hearing Him.

Jesus says parables reveal the secrets of the kingdom to those who lean in, but they conceal truth from hearts that have already refused it. The disciples show what ears that hear actually look like because they come to Jesus and ask what the parable means. God’s mercy, not intelligence or religious effort, gives eyes that see Jesus as Savior and ears that hear the gospel.

The seed stays the same. The sower stays the same. The ground is the variable. The hard heart lets the word sit on the surface until the evil one snatches it away. The shallow heart receives the word with immediate joy, but heat exposes that no root ever went down. The divided heart lets worries and wealth grow like thorns, slowly choking fruitfulness through anxiety on one side and comfort on the other. The good heart hears and understands, and that hearing produces a real crop.

Jesus makes clear that exposure is not the issue. The path receives seed, the rocky ground receives seed and sprouts, and the thorny ground receives seed and grows. Root is the issue. Christ must take root before anything entrusted by Him can be faithfully managed. Money, calendars, families, wisdom, and resources cannot be stewarded for long by a heart that remains unbroken underneath.

God alone gives a new heart of flesh, yet the heart must honestly ask where it has become packed down, shallow, or crowded. The sower still scatters seed on every kind of ground. Jesus is not standing over hard ground with crossed arms. He is still sowing, still calling for the whole field to be opened to Him.
