Psalm 103 begins with David telling his own soul to bless the Lord with all that is within him. David does not come to God halfway. David was an all in kind of man, all in when he praised, all in when he failed, and all in when he returned to the Lord. The Psalm begins and ends with blessing because the Lord is worthy in the cave, in the hard season, in the grief, and in the good day.

David names the Lord as the one who forgives all iniquity, heals diseases, redeems life from the pit, crowns with steadfast love and mercy, and satisfies with good. God is not just the God who fixes one small part of life. God forgives, heals, redeems, crowns, and renews. The Lord does not give a little mercy and then hold the rest back. The Lord pours out love and mercy day after day, moment after moment.

The Psalm then shows the works of the Lord in righteousness and justice. David remembers Israel’s history, from Moses to oppression to enemies coming after God’s people. The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love. God does not deal with his people according to their sins or pay them according to their iniquities. That is not small kindness. That is mercy bigger than human beings know how to measure.

The heart of the Psalm is the way God views sin. God does not put sin in a little pile off to the side so he can bring it back later. God removes transgression as far as the east is from the west. The heavenly Father knows the frame of his children and remembers that they are dust. God knows the weakness, the wickedness, the sin nature, and still shows compassion to those who fear him.

The contrast between man and the Lord is sharp. Man is like grass, like a flower that flourishes for a moment and then is gone. Life is fragile, like a flower that can dry up, drown, or never grow when rocks get thrown into the soil. But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. The Lord stays the same when every generation passes away.

The Father’s Day application grows out of that picture of God as Father. God loves his children, God knows them and is proud of them in Christ, and God forgives them. The three statements every person wants to hear from a father are simple but weighty: “I love you,” “I’m proud of you,” and “I’m sorry.” The call is not to assume those things are understood. The call is to live in the details and say them.
