Matthew 14 places Peter in a boat, in the middle of a storm, while Jesus comes walking on the water. Jesus gives Peter one word, “Come.” Jesus does not hand Peter a five step plan, explain every detail, or promise that the wind will stop. Peter faces the real question: does he stay where it feels comfortable, or does he step toward Jesus?
Faith sometimes requires leaving the boat. The boat is not necessarily bad, even in the storm. The boat represents places, plans, and patterns that may feel safe, familiar, and reasonable, yet Jesus may still call a person beyond them. Faith does not begin once every answer is in place. Faith begins when Jesus says, “Come.”
Peter cannot step onto the water while holding onto the boat. Peter must leave the security of the boat and put his full trust in Christ. The desire for “Jesus and control,” “Jesus and a backup plan,” or “Jesus and comfort” keeps faith from becoming real obedience. The water underneath the word of Jesus is safer than the boat outside the will of Jesus.
Peter begins to sink when the wind and waves become bigger in his sight than Jesus. Peter’s cry, “Lord, save me,” meets an immediate response. Jesus stretches out His hand at once. Jesus does not stand over Peter with an “I told you so.” Jesus responds with mercy, grace, and help in Peter’s moment of need. Fear of failure may keep people in the boat, but failure outside the boat is not beyond the reach of Christ’s hand.
The Holy Spirit was not given to make comfortable Christians more comfortable. Acts 1:8 gives power to witness, speak, serve, go, and step out when Jesus calls. Church cannot merely become a climate-controlled place where people rate worship and preaching. God calls His people to conviction over sin, hunger for holiness, signs and wonders, and a real experience of His power.
The last days require holiness rather than ear-tickling comfort. The Bible confronts a culture that wants manageable truth, customized answers, and endless contingency plans. God reveals His Word and pours out His Spirit because heaven and hell are not a game. Jesus calls His church to leave the boat full of the Holy Ghost and do His work in a world that needs the power of God.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Faith begins with Jesus’ command Jesus does not always supply explanations before He calls for obedience. Peter receives one clear word, “Come,” and that word is enough because Christ Himself stands behind it. Faith is not the possession of certainty about outcomes but trust in the One who calls. [102:55]
- 2. Comfort can become spiritual captivity The boat is not evil, but it becomes a problem when it keeps Peter from Jesus. Familiar routines, backup plans, and manageable religion can quietly replace surrendered obedience. The will of Jesus is safer in the storm than comfort outside His call. [104:46]
- 3. Jesus catches those who sink Peter’s failure does not cancel Christ’s mercy. Jesus reaches immediately when Peter cries for help, revealing that grace meets sincere dependence rather than mocking human weakness. Fear of failure should not become an excuse for refusing obedience. [106:29]
- 4. The Spirit empowers movement, not passivity The Holy Spirit gives power for witness, service, speech, and bold action. Church cannot exist merely to provide a comfortable religious experience for those already inside. The Spirit sends people beyond the boat when Jesus says, “Come.” [110:27]
- 5. Holiness cannot be customized for comfort The Word of God confronts sin, culture, and the desire to hear only agreeable things. Endless access to preferred answers cannot replace humble submission to Scripture. The urgency of eternity calls for a life that takes God seriously.
