Day 1: The Lamp’s Silent Potential Without Connection

A disconnected lamp holds beauty and purpose, but cannot fulfill its design until plugged into power. Our capacity to love others remains dormant when we rely on self-sufficiency rather than divine connection. Just as the lamp’s light requires an external source, our ability to build others through patience, kindness, and grace flows only from abiding in God. True spiritual fruit emerges not from effort but from surrender to the One who is Love itself. [46:00]

“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.” (1 John 4:7-8, ESV)

Sermon Summary

Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 show what love looks like when it is working right. Love is patient, kind, not jealous, not proud, not rude, not self-seeking, and not easily provoked. Love does not keep records of wrongs, but it rejoices in truth, keeps hope, and endures. Love builds. Knowledge can puff people up, church protocol can still wound people, and being right can still tear somebody down. But love builds people up.

God is the source of that kind of love. First John says that love is of God, and God is love. The question is not whether somebody is connected to Facebook, Wi-Fi, or even just connected to a church building. The real question is, are they connected to the Source? The lamp has purpose, potential, and a beautiful design, but it cannot do what it was created to do while it is disconnected from the power. People cannot fulfill their purpose apart from God either.

The lamp shows that light does not have to struggle when it is plugged into the source. Love, patience, compassion, encouragement, grace, and forgiveness begin to flow when God is supplying them. Hurt people, difficult people, misunderstandings, and disappointments can make somebody feel empty. But God gives what a person cannot manufacture alone. The prayer becomes, “Lord, don’t allow what happened to me to determine what comes out of me.”

Love also asks a hard question before words and actions go out: is this building somebody, or is it breaking somebody? Gossip, angry texts, public posts, and careless correction can tear down. Truth still matters, boundaries still matter, and correction still has a place. But biblical correction seeks restoration, not humiliation. Love says, “You’re better than this,” without exposing somebody just to make them hurt.

John connects knowing God with loving people, so a claim to know God ought to have evidence. Compassion should turn on. Patience should turn on. Kindness, grace, and forgiveness should turn on. Somebody may be smiling while carrying grief, financial trouble, exhaustion, family pain, or a battle nobody else knows about. A phone call, a text, a prayer, a smile, or simply saying, “I’m with you,” can become the light that helps somebody keep going.

God’s light does not run out because somebody else shines. Another person’s blessing does not cancel anybody else’s blessing. People connected to the Source do not have to compete for the light. God is the source, love is the evidence, and edification is the assignment. When life is unfair, when hearts are hurt, and when love becomes difficult, the call remains the same: stay connected to the Source.
