Standing Strong: Joseph's Faithfulness Amid Temptation

Summary

In Genesis 39, we delve into the life of Joseph, focusing on his encounter with temptation and his steadfast faithfulness. This narrative is a profound exploration of sexual temptation, a subject that resonates deeply with both men and women. The juxtaposition of Genesis 38 and 39 highlights that neither gender holds a monopoly on virtue or vice, emphasizing that temptation is a universal experience. Joseph's story is not just for men to see themselves in his shoes but for women as well, as everyone faces temptation and can stand strong in Christ.

The sermon outlines three main points: when we are vulnerable to temptation, how to stand strong against it, and the outcomes of our faithfulness. We are most vulnerable during specific seasons: when young and single, when good-looking, after hard work and success, when opportunities arise, when away from home, without accountability, and when temptation is persistent. Recognizing these times helps us prepare and guard against falling into sin.

To stand strong against temptation, we need clear commitments, communication, and boundaries. Joseph exemplifies this by refusing Potiphar's wife, maintaining his integrity, and setting boundaries to avoid sin. The motives behind these strategies are crucial: the trust of a servant, recognizing the wickedness of sin, and the fear of the Lord. These motives provide the strength to uphold our commitments and resist temptation.

Faithfulness, though challenging, brings unforeseen blessings. Joseph's faithfulness led to imprisonment, yet it was through this that he met Pharaoh's cupbearer, eventually leading to his rise as a prime minister and the salvation of his family. Our faithfulness, too, can have ripple effects beyond our imagination, impacting others and fulfilling God's greater plan.

Ultimately, Jesus offers forgiveness for past sins and power to face future temptations. Joseph's story points us to Christ, who was tempted yet without sin, and who bore our guilt and shame on the cross. In Him, we find hope, forgiveness, and strength to overcome temptation.

By identifying these seasons of vulnerability, we can take proactive steps to strengthen our defenses and seek God's guidance to remain steadfast in our faith. [03:12]

"Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall." (1 Corinthians 10:12, ESV)

Reflection: Identify a current season in your life where you feel most vulnerable to temptation. What practical steps can you take today to guard against falling into sin during this time?

Day 2: Strategies for Resistance
Standing strong against temptation requires clear commitments, communication, and boundaries. Joseph's refusal of Potiphar's wife exemplifies the importance of setting firm boundaries and maintaining integrity. By establishing these strategies, we can protect ourselves from compromising situations and remain true to our values. It is essential to communicate our boundaries clearly and hold ourselves accountable to them, seeking God's strength to uphold our commitments. [14:26]

Quotes

In Genesis 39, we have a story of a man who suffers greatly because of the sins of a woman. In Genesis in chapter 38, we have the story of Tamar and Judah, where a woman suffers greatly because of the sins of a man. It is very significant that these two chapters are placed side by side in the Bible. [00:00:56]

There is no monopoly of either virtue or vice between the genders, and the themes of tempting and of being tempted speak both to men and to women alike. And it would be very easy as we come to the story in chapter 39 today for the men to put themselves in the shoes of Joseph. [00:01:00]

When you are vulnerable to temptation, watch and pray. Have your eyes open. Know where times and seasons make you vulnerable. How then can you stand strong against temptation? That's the second thing. Now there are two parts to the answer here: motives and strategies. Both of them are really important. [00:14:16]

Strategies deal with what you do in order to stand up against temptation, and motives deal with how you find the strength to put the strategies into practice. So we'll look at the strategies first, and there are three, and they're very simple. The first is a clear commitment. [00:14:39]

Joseph must have been aware that Potiphar's wife had her eyes on him. He had known over a long period of time that trouble was brewing, and when it came out into the open, he had already settled the issue in his mind: I can't do this. Now please understand this, friends, that an open mind in the face of temptation makes failure inevitable. [00:15:05]

A godly life revolves around commitments, and if you have no commitments in your life, your life will drift. So in any situation in which you find yourself, you need to ask the question: What is the big temptation that is likely to be here for me? Name it, and then make a commitment before God to guard against it. [00:15:40]

Joseph calls sin by its proper name. Now notice this: you might like to talk about this a bit in the life groups this week. The world is always in the business of coming up with fresh language to make sin more acceptable. So instead of describing what Joseph was tempted to hear as an act of adultery, people today would say, "Oh, it's an affair or a fling." [00:24:29]

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the great motive that a Christian has in battling against temptation is that we have come to love God. We looked at this theme of the fear of the Lord last year, and we defined it in this way: that the fear of the Lord means that his frown would be your greatest dread and his smile would be your greatest delight. [00:26:01]

Faithfulness will not be easy. Joseph must have known that his faithfulness would be costly. It certainly was not beyond him to foresee what would happen, what Potiphar's wife would do with the robe that she had clutched. And sure enough, as we will see next time, the immediate outcome of Joseph's faithfulness to God in pursuing the path of purity is that it landed him in prison. [00:28:38]

It was through the faithfulness of Joseph that he ended up in prison, yes, but it was through being in prison that he met Pharaoh's cupbearer. It was through the cupbearer that Joseph was introduced to Pharaoh. It was through Pharaoh that he came to be the wise prime minister who provided food for his people. [00:31:15]

Jesus came to bring forgiveness for our past sins and power to face our future temptations. He came for these two reasons. He came to bring forgiveness for our past sins and power to face our future temptations. And every one of us needs both forgiveness for our past sins and power to face our future temptations. [00:35:27]

Jesus goes to the cross, and why is he on the cross? What's he doing? He's bearing guilt and shame. The guilt and shame of what? The guilt and shame of all our sins, including sexual sins of mind and of body, and he bore them in his body on the tree. He carried them into his death and he buried them there as far as his people are concerned. [00:38:46]
