Standing Strong Is Fruitful

Jesus’ picture of two builders puts perseverance in its proper place. The man who digs deep and lays a foundation on rock may spend a long time doing hard, unseen work before the flood ever comes. The space between “laid the foundation on rock” and “when” can be a long stretch of wondering whether faithfulness is worth it. Christ remains the solid foundation, and the storms reveal what has been built.

James names the circumstances of both the poor and the rich as humility before Christ. The poor hold a high position in Christ, while the rich remember that wealth fades like a wildflower under scorching heat. James brings every status level to the same place: all stand equal before the Lord, and all will one day fall before him in worship. Mary’s low estate and Christ’s humiliation show that humility is not a dead-end place but the place where God works.

James then returns to perseverance under trial. Perseverance, or sticktuitiveness, grows like a muscle through practice. The weight of the gospel can feel heavy at first, but faithful reps of living and declaring the good news make believers stronger over time. James calls the one who stands the test dokimos: approved, authentic, whole, and full weight, like a coin that has not been shaved down to cheat another person.

James promises the crown of life to those who love the Lord and endure. Paul’s picture of athletes training for a fading crown sharpens the contrast: Christ gives a crown that will never tarnish or fade. Christ knows suffering from the inside, and Christ uses even painful endurance to shape his people into his likeness.
