Standing Firm: The Global Impact of the Reformation

Summary

In our time together, I shared stories of how God is at work globally, particularly in Asia and the Middle East, through the enduring influence of the Reformation and the solas. These stories remind us that the courage and conviction of Martin Luther, who stood firm on the truth of God's Word over 500 years ago, continue to inspire believers worldwide. We heard from a young international student whose life was transformed by discovering biblical teachings during the pandemic, leading her to pursue a Master's degree in Apologetics. This transformation echoes the ongoing impact of the Reformation, which still emboldens Christians to stand firm in their faith.

In Asia, a continent of immense diversity and complexity, the gospel is being proclaimed despite significant challenges. Christians there face cultural and political pressures, yet they hold fast to the truth of sola Scriptura as their guiding principle. Testimonies from China and India highlight the importance of Scripture as the bedrock of faith, providing clarity and strength amidst competing spiritual voices. These believers draw courage from Luther's example, standing firm in the truth even in hostile environments.

Similarly, in the Middle East and North Africa, where Christianity faces opposition, the solas of the Reformation provide a framework for understanding and defending the faith. Despite the dominance of Islam and the risks associated with conversion, there is a growing disillusionment with Islam, leading some to seek the truth of the gospel. Christian leaders in this region emphasize the necessity of sola Scriptura to maintain the integrity of the gospel message and to nurture a Christ-like life.

As we reflect on these stories, we are reminded of the power of God's Word to transform lives and the importance of standing firm in the truth. We are called to pray for our brothers and sisters in these regions, asking God to protect them, grant them wisdom, and give them boldness to proclaim the gospel.

Day 1: The Reformation's Global Influence

The Reformation, initiated by Martin Luther over 500 years ago, continues to have a profound impact on Christians worldwide. The courage and conviction demonstrated by Luther in standing firm on the truth of God's Word serve as a powerful inspiration for believers today. This enduring influence is evident in the stories of individuals whose lives have been transformed by the discovery of biblical teachings. For instance, a young international student found new purpose during the pandemic, leading her to pursue a Master's degree in Apologetics. This transformation highlights the ongoing relevance of the Reformation, encouraging Christians to remain steadfast in their faith. [01:05]

"For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart." (Hebrews 4:12, ESV)

Reflection: Consider a time when you stood firm in your faith despite challenges. How did the truth of God's Word guide and strengthen you during that period?

Day 2: Sola Scriptura in Asia's Diversity

In Asia, a continent marked by immense cultural and religious diversity, Christians face unique challenges. Despite these pressures, the commitment to sola Scriptura provides clarity and strength amidst competing spiritual voices. Testimonies from countries like China and India underscore the importance of Scripture as the foundation of faith. These believers draw courage from the example of Martin Luther, standing firm in the truth even in hostile environments. The gospel is being proclaimed, and lives are being transformed, demonstrating the power of God's Word to overcome adversity. [05:17]

"All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work." (2 Timothy 3:16-17, ESV)

Reflection: In what ways can you prioritize the study of Scripture in your daily life to gain clarity and strength amidst the diverse voices you encounter?

Day 3: Seeking Truth in the Middle East

In the Middle East and North Africa, regions dominated by Islam, there is a growing disillusionment with Islam, leading some to seek the truth of the gospel. Despite the risks associated with conversion, the solas of the Reformation provide a framework for understanding and defending the faith. Christian leaders in these regions emphasize the necessity of sola Scriptura to maintain the integrity of the gospel message and to nurture a Christ-like life. This movement towards the gospel highlights the transformative power of God's Word in even the most challenging environments. [09:56]

"For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek." (Romans 1:16, ESV)

The courage and conviction of Martin Luther, who stood firm on the truth of God's Word over 500 years ago, continue to inspire believers to stand firm in their faith, even in hostile environments. This legacy is evident in the testimonies of Christians in Asia and the Middle East who face cultural and political pressures. Quotes

And what encourages me about these stories is that it reminds me that more than 500 years after Luther nailed the 95 theses to that church door there in Wittenberg, it still echoes around the world and what we're remembering today, 500 years after his bold stand there at the Diet of Worms, that that moment is still being used by the Lord to give Christians courage and conviction to stand firm on the truthfulness of God's Word. [00:01:05]

Living in this world, there are so many voices and authorities. In order to serve Chinese churches with truth and to choose the right books to publish and to make the right digital content available in China, sola Scriptura helps us make decisions. It means that the Scriptures are our sole infallible source of authority and standard for spiritual truth. [00:05:27]

We also need to remind ourselves, sola Scriptura should not just be a slogan, but a practice and a spirit. We need to humbly obey it and live it out. Luther's stand for the truth of Scripture of the Diet of Worms encourages us to fight for the truth, stand up and speak up for the truth. It takes courage. Wisdom is also needed. [00:05:52]

I would think that in our context, sola Scriptura would have to be the most significant for our ministry because it is only the Scriptures that can be the bedrock of our faith and provide the basis for the understanding of who we are as believers in Christ and everything that we stand for. [00:06:27]

Any unclear, confused, or muddled understanding of sola Scriptura leads to a weak and an impoverished faith and a failed attempt to build a community that does not have a strong foundation. In a country where there are myriads of voices competing to provide spiritual guidance and enlightenment, it is only by holding onto the sola Scriptura that we can navigate through all this confusion humbly yet confidently. [00:06:43]

Luther's stand for the truth encourages us not to give in, not to succumb to any pressure to abandon the truth, even in the face of current hostile situations and a pervasive unwillingness to accept any exclusive claim to the truth based on the Scriptures, not just from the unbelievers, but for many who claim to be followers of Christ. [00:07:17]

What I find encouraging as I think about the Middle East is the reports that we're hearing, particularly from Iran, that because of all of the uprest and violence in recent years, there are many Muslims that are really becoming disillusioned with Islam. But despite that, it doesn't mean that being a Christian in the Middle East is easy, particularly if you're converting from Islam to Christianity. [00:08:47]

Sola Scriptura is the most significant. Without it, all other solas would be distorted. It's the most popular sola under attack from liberal scholars. Without the inerrancy and infallibility of the Bible, the church would lose its course. Christians would negotiate the gospel message if they abandon sola Scriptura. The ultimate truth is within our hands. [00:10:53]

Sola Scriptura will humble us. It will make us in continuous need of semper reformanda to align and fine tune our lives and our church to the Bible. It will make us study and compare any interpretation carefully. We need to meditate on God's Word daily to nurture from it," quote, "My conscience is captive to the Word of God," quoting Luther there. [00:11:15]

I hope hearing from these people from Asia and the Middle East have encouraged you to know that the Lord is building his church and the gates of hell truly are not prevailing against it. And Luther's bold stand there in Worms is providing courage for Christians to stand for truth. [00:12:01]

Firstly, pray that God will protect Christians in countries like China and India, and help the church to grow and to flourish there. Pray that governments, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa, that they would uphold freedom of religion and perhaps even provide protections for Muslims who convert to the Christian faith. [00:12:38]

And lastly, pray for Christians living in both regions that they would have wisdom and that they would have boldness like Luther did to stand for the truth and to proclaim the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. [00:13:05]
