Standing Firm: Embracing God's Grace Amidst Opposition
Summary
In today's message, we explored the profound narrative of Acts 22, where Paul makes his final plea to his Jewish brethren, urging them to recognize Jesus as the Messiah they have long awaited. Despite his passionate appeal, Paul faces fierce opposition, as the Jewish leaders are incensed by his message that both Jews and Gentiles are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, without the need to adhere to Old Testament laws. This radical inclusivity of the gospel challenges the traditional Jewish understanding and leads to a violent reaction against Paul.
Paul's Roman citizenship becomes a pivotal point in the narrative, as it saves him from the brutal punishment of flogging. This aspect of his identity, providentially placed in his past, serves as a reminder of how God can use our backgrounds and experiences for His purposes, even when we don't understand them at the time. The sermon also highlights the tension between the Pharisees and Sadducees, illustrating how Paul's strategic declaration of his Pharisaic roots and belief in the resurrection causes division among his accusers, ultimately leading to his protection by Roman authorities.
The message emphasizes the importance of standing firm in faith, even amidst opposition and misunderstanding. It challenges us to reflect on our own lives and consider how God might be using our past experiences for His glory. Furthermore, it encourages us to rely on God's presence and sovereignty, especially in times of fear and uncertainty. The assurance that God stands by us, as He did with Paul, provides comfort and courage to face the challenges ahead.

Devotional
Day 1: Embracing Radical Inclusivity
In Acts 22, Paul passionately appeals to his Jewish brethren to recognize Jesus as the Messiah, emphasizing that both Jews and Gentiles are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. This message of radical inclusivity was revolutionary and met with fierce resistance from the Jewish leaders, who were incensed by the idea that salvation was available to all, without adherence to Old Testament laws. This challenges us to embrace all people as equal recipients of God's grace, breaking down barriers of tradition and prejudice. We are called to reflect on our own biases and consider how we can extend God's love to everyone, regardless of their background or beliefs. [20:20]
Galatians 3:28 (ESV): "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus."
Reflection: Who in your life have you unintentionally excluded from your love and acceptance? How can you actively show them the inclusivity of God's grace today?
Day 2: Recognizing Providence in Our Past
Paul's Roman citizenship, a seemingly mundane detail, becomes crucial in his protection from flogging. This aspect of his identity serves as a reminder of how God can use our backgrounds and experiences for His purposes, even when we don't understand them at the time. We are encouraged to trust that God is weaving our stories for His glory, even when we don't see the full picture. Reflect on your own life and consider how past experiences, even painful ones, might be used by God for His purposes. [28:25]
Genesis 50:20 (ESV): "As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today."
Reflection: What past experience in your life have you struggled to see as part of God's plan? How might God be using it for His glory now?
Day 3: Standing Firm in Faith
Despite facing violent opposition, Paul remains steadfast in his faith and mission. This challenges us to stand firm in our beliefs, even when misunderstood or opposed, trusting that God is with us and will use our faithfulness for His purposes. In times of fear and uncertainty, we are reminded that God's presence is our strength, and His sovereignty ensures that we are never truly alone. Consider how you can stand firm in your faith today, even in the face of challenges. [36:25]
1 Corinthians 16:13-14 (ESV): "Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love."
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you feel your faith is being tested? How can you stand firm and trust in God's presence today?
Day 4: The Power of God's Presence
The assurance that "the Lord stood by him" provides immense comfort and courage. In times of fear and uncertainty, we are reminded that God's presence is our strength, and His sovereignty ensures that we are never truly alone. This assurance encourages us to rely on God's presence and sovereignty, especially in times of fear and uncertainty. Reflect on how you can lean into God's presence for strength and courage in your own life. [47:36]
Isaiah 41:10 (ESV): "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."
Reflection: When have you felt God's presence most strongly in your life? How can you seek His presence in your current circumstances?
Day 5: The Call to Fearlessness
Christians are called to be fearless, trusting in God's plan and presence. In a world filled with anxiety, we are to be custodians of peace, relying on prayer and God's promises to navigate life's challenges with courage and faith. This call to fearlessness challenges us to trust in God's plan and presence, even when the world around us is filled with anxiety. Consider how you can be a custodian of peace in your own life and the lives of those around you. [55:16]
2 Timothy 1:7 (ESV): "For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control."
Reflection: What is one fear that is holding you back from fully trusting in God's plan? How can you begin to release that fear and embrace God's peace today?
Quotes
Paul is preaching that you can be saved by Jesus. By grace through faith. It's not of yourselves. It's the gift of God. Let's any man should boast. And so Paul's preaching the true gospel and the Jewish people did not like that. Because what Paul is saying is this that Jew and Gentile are both saved by grace and Jew and Gentile can come to the Father the same way. [00:21:28]
Paul says, I'm a Roman citizen. And what you're doing is illegal. And if you were to flog or scourge a Roman citizen, you could die in Rome. Because Roman citizens were not supposed to have this happen to them. Roman people did this to other people. Roman citizens were not going to be put to death this way. [00:25:14]
Are there things in your life that God providentially put in your past? That can help you in the future and you didn't realize it when it was going on in the past. Can that happen? Maybe it was that some of you grew up in church. Some of you grew up in church and you were bored out of your mind. [00:28:25]
God providentially puts things in our past. God can also providentially put something in your past that was painful, but you don't find out until much later how God brings good and how God can redeem those horrible, painful things in our past as well. [00:29:22]
Paul is saying this. I am a faithful Jew. I've been faithful to the Old Testament, and I do not believe you find grace in keeping the law. I am a faithful Jew. I have been faithful to the Old Testament, and I do not believe you find grace in keeping the law. [00:34:56]
Whenever someone hurts you, here's the beauty of being a Christian. You never have to take revenge. I've said this before that all the attributes of God in the Bible, the Bible tells us to pursue. God's holy, pursue holiness. God is loving, pursue loving. The one attribute that the Bible does not tell us to be like God in is revenge. [00:41:09]
Paul was safer with Roman guards than he was with Jewish people and I bet Paul was very discouraged this point my final shot to preach and they want me dead a man like this does not deserve to live but look who shows up look at verse 10 and verse 11 and verse 11 and verse 11 and verse 11 and verse 11 and verse 11 the following night the Lord stood by him. [00:47:36]
The Lord stood by him that night it's amazing how you and God make a majority let's fix that God makes a majority if God's with you you're never in a bind because God's never in a bind there's never a situation where something that's not supposed to happen happens because God's providentially sovereignly in charge of every situation. [00:47:56]
Christians should be fearless Christians should be the least anxious people on this planet anxiety I read the other day that the average 16 year old has the same level of anxiety right now in 2024 that would have put you in a saint asylum in the 1950s we are the ones who are the custodians of peace in order to have peace you can't let fear dominate year. [00:51:06]
I believe we can take great comfort in 2025 because God is going to get done what he has planned to do in 2025. I can trust his plan. It's perfect even in the dark and the Lord will stand by me and the Lord will stand by you. Often God will not tell you when he's going to do something. [00:55:16]
Because when you are a redeemed person, you are a forgiving person. And you're not coming to church to find perfect people. You're coming to church to find broken people who know and can tell you about the perfect God. Amen? Let me get the second thing off. I'll explain. [01:05:17]
Because God will do something through you only he can pull off. And then you get to see the hand of God. And you'll never doubt again this year whether he loves you and whether you can go through this year fearless. Amen? Would you stand? It's so fun. We all get to leave together. Chili's is still there. I love you guys. [01:08:04]
