Jesus is coming back soon, and that truth calls God’s people to live ready and to help prepare the world for His return. Numbers 16 gives a strong picture of that calling through Aaron standing “between the dead and the living” while a plague moved through Israel.
Israel received the proper punishment because the people rebelled against God’s chosen authority even after Korah, Dathan, Abiram, and the 250 leaders had been judged. Israel saw the ground open up and fire fall, yet the very next morning the people were still muttering and blaming Moses and Aaron. Sin was not forgetfulness. Sin was rebellion against God. Romans 6:23 shows that the wages of sin is death, and every person apart from Christ stands under that same judgment.
Moses kept the proper perspective when he and Aaron fell face down before God. Moses had every human reason to want judgment on people who continually opposed him, but Moses saw Israel as God’s people and prayed for mercy. Acts 1:8 pushes that same heart beyond comfortable geography. Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the ends of the earth include people nearby, people far away, people unlike Christians, and even people Christians may not naturally like. God’s love does not stop where personal feelings begin.
Aaron moved at the proper pace because the plague had already begun. Aaron did not walk, meander, or wait until the situation felt easier. Aaron ran into the middle of the crowd, into the mess, where people were dying. The urgency remains because people in local communities and across the world are spiritually dying without Christ. Nearly half the world remains unreached, without access to the gospel or someone who can show them the way of life.
God revealed the perfect plan through Aaron’s priestly action. Aaron foreshadowed Christ, the true High Priest who stands between sinners and eternal death. Jesus crossed the gap created by sin through His death and resurrection, making life and freedom available to those who were spiritually dead. Christ now sends His people into the middle of other people’s pain, not as nosy or gossiping people, but as those who genuinely love, listen, pray, share their stories, and point to Jesus.
Discipleship cannot be low living, small planning, tamed vision, or a slow pace. God calls every believer to hold plans, careers, possessions, gifts, and dreams loosely before Him. The King of kings receives every surrendered thing as worship, and serving Him is not drudgery but an honor. God’s people are called to stand between the dead and the living so the plague of sin may stop.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Sin deserves judgment, yet Christ saves. Israel’s rebellion shows that sin is not harmless complaining or merely a bad attitude. Sin resists God’s authority and leads toward death. Christ does not minimize that judgment, but He bears its weight and opens the only path to life. [47:20]
- 2. God’s love reaches difficult people. Moses prayed for people who had wounded and opposed him because he saw them through God’s eyes. Samaria reminds believers that witness is not limited to people who feel safe, familiar, or deserving. Love becomes most like God’s love when it remains present in the face of tension and hurt. [52:56]
- 3. The gospel requires holy urgency. Aaron ran because the plague was already moving among the people. Spiritual death is not a distant issue reserved for another country or another generation. God’s people are often the answer to their own prayers for God to send someone. [56:26]
- 4. Christ stands between death and life. Aaron’s incense and intercession point forward to Jesus, the perfect High Priest. Christ alone stops the plague of sin by reconciling enemies of God through His cross and resurrection. Christians stand among the spiritually dead only because Christ first stood in their place. [58:46]
- 5. Surrendered lives become worship. God does not merely ask for religious activity while personal dreams remain guarded. Every goal, possession, ability, and future can be laid at the feet of the King as worship. Service becomes an honor when Christ is truly Lord over every yes and every no.
