Bible ReadingDaniel 3:1-6 King Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold, whose height was sixty cubits and its breadth six cubits. He set it up on the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon. Then King Nebuchadnezzar sent to gather the satraps, the prefects, and the governors, the counselors, the treasurers, the justices, the magistrates, and all the officials of the provinces to come to the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up. Then the satraps, the prefects, and the governors, the counselors, the treasurers, the justices, the magistrates, and all the officials of the provinces gathered for the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up. And they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up. And the herald proclaimed aloud, “You are commanded, O peoples, nations, and languages, that when you hear the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, you are to fall down and worship the golden image that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up. And whoever does not fall down and worship shall immediately be cast into a burning fiery furnace.”
[32:41]Deuteronomy 6:4-7 “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.”
[38:25]Matthew 7:13-14 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”
[48:20]Daniel 3:16-18 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”
[01:02:31]Exodus 20:3-5 “You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me,”
[40:14]Observation questions- What details in Daniel 3:1-6 show that Nebuchadnezzar’s command was meant to reach every part of his kingdom, not just a few people?
- How does Deuteronomy 6 describe the times and places where God’s people are to speak about loving and obeying Him? [38:49]
- What two truths do Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego hold together in Daniel 3:16-18: God’s ability to rescue them and their refusal to worship the image?
- In Matthew 7:13-14, what contrasts does Jesus make between the wide way and the narrow way? [48:20]
Interpretation questions- Why would Nebuchadnezzar’s golden image have been a direct attack on worship of the one true God and on the command not to bow before other gods? [41:23]
- The image may not be a literal statue in a person’s life. What does it look like when self becomes the god being obeyed—when personal wants get the final word over God’s command? [42:49]
- Why is it important that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stand without Daniel present? What does their example show about relying on another person’s faith? [53:39]
- What does “but if not” teach believers about trusting God when obedience does not bring the outcome they hoped for? [01:03:06]
Application questions- What is most likely to compete for your worship right now: comfort, approval, control, entertainment, money, your phone, or simply getting your own way? What would it look like to stop bowing to that thing this week? [31:26]
- Where are you tempted to build a “buffet Christianity”—keeping the parts of following Jesus you like while resisting the parts that cost you? What part of your life needs to come more fully under Christ’s rule? [50:43]
- Deuteronomy 6 calls for faith to be talked about at home, on the road, at bedtime, and in the morning. What is one normal moment in your household or daily routine where you could more intentionally point someone to Jesus?
- Is there an area where your faith is mostly borrowed from a parent, spouse, friend, small-group leader, or church? What would taking personal responsibility to stand for Christ look like there? [54:34]
- When standing for Jesus could bring awkwardness, rejection, or loss, what kind of “half-bow” are you tempted to make? How can this group help you stand clearly and lovingly instead? [59:19]
- Think about a current hardship, pressure, or fear. Can you honestly say, “God is able, but if not, I will still trust and obey Him”? What makes that hard to say, and what truth about God do you need to hold onto? [01:14:08]
- God has placed His people where they are so that others can see the God they serve. Who is already in your circle of influence, and how could your faithful response to difficulty make Jesus more visible to them? [01:13:40]
