Who Can Actually Stand in the Presence of God?

Revelation 1 opens vision one with John turning to see the voice speaking to him, and the sight is terrifying glory. The seven golden lampstands are the churches, flickering lights on earth, and the Son of Man is walking among them. His face shines like the sun in full strength, his eyes burn like fire, his feet gleam like bronze refined in a furnace, and a sharp two edged sword comes from his mouth. John falls at his feet as though dead because facing the living God in glory is no light thing.

Sin is like gasoline on the clothes, and God is a consuming fire. Moses trembled at the mountain, Aaron could only enter the holy place once a year, Aaron’s sons died for strange fire, and Uzzah died touching the ark. Those were only copies and shadows, so the true presence of God is not something sinners can stroll into casually. Psalm 24 asks the real question: who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? Only the one with clean hands, a pure heart, and a truthful mouth.

The image of God explains why sin is so serious. Man was made to represent God as prophet, priest, and king. Lies make man a false prophet. Unrighteousness makes man an unclean priest. Submission to Satan makes man a failed king. Every sin misrepresents God and brings shame on his name.

Aaron cannot solve it, because Aaron made the golden calf. Moses cannot solve it, because Moses struck the rock. David cannot solve it, because David had blood on his hands. The Old Testament shows the failure of the best men to be the prophet, priest, and king humanity needs.

Revelation begins with victory because Christ stands behind the veil as the true Prophet, Priest, and King. Christ wears his own righteousness as pure priestly garments. Christ speaks with the roar of many waters as the faithful Prophet whose sheep hear his voice. Christ holds the stars in his right hand and rules heaven and earth as King.

The central word is “fear not.” Christ has gone before his people in the past, entered the true holy place, and conquered death. Christ gives spiritual access now, because he took the gasoline soaked garments of sin, bore wrath, died, rose, and silenced the accuser. Christ will bring his people into physical victory at his return, when the valley of tribulation gives way to the final mountaintop. Revelation does not begin with a scared church, but with the triumphant Christ who says, “Fear not.”
