Stand Firm in the Strength of the Lord

Paul writes Ephesians from a prison cell as a man who knows what it feels like to be beaten down, left out, shipwrecked, persecuted, and pushed to the edge. Paul does not tell the church to find strength in arguments, politics, education, physical power, money, jobs, pride, or whatever is trending. Paul says, “Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.” Christ is the solid rock, and every other ground is sinking sand. Christ holds his people up, so their strength does not come from trying harder to hold themselves together.

The rock image shows that power comes from the foundation. A boxer’s power does not start in the fist but comes up from planted feet, and the life of faith works the same way. Christ pulls his people back into himself, creating the tension that sends them into the world with real kingdom impact. The output is never the source of power. The foundation is.

Paul also redirects the fight. Flesh and blood may be loud, frustrating, and right in front of somebody’s face, but the real struggle is against spiritual forces of wickedness. God gives every believer access to the same armor, regardless of age, strength, gender, or stage of life. The helmet of salvation guards the mind with the truth that Christ has rescued his people. The breastplate of righteousness guards the heart, not through self-righteousness, but through right standing with God.

Christ, the truth, is the belt that holds everything together and keeps loose ends from causing a fall. The gospel of peace gives the feet a grip like cleats in the ground, enabling believers to stand without slipping. Faith goes ahead like a shield, especially as believers lock shields together with others who trust God. The Word of God is the sword, the one offensive weapon, wielded as Christ wielded it in temptation: “It is written.” Prayer puts on the armor, exposes the schemes, strengthens the saints, and keeps the battle where it belongs, in the spiritual realm.
