Exodus 14 brings Israel out of Egypt with more than they came in with, marching toward freedom after 430 years of bondage. God brings them out by a strong hand, but God does not take them the short way, because the shortcut would have put them in a fight too soon and sent them running back to Egypt. God takes them the long way so that his people can learn his goodness, his grace, his peace, his strength, and how to lean on him.
God then tells Moses to camp in a place that looks like a trap. Israel has mountains on every side, the Red Sea in front, and Pharaoh behind. God positions his people between a rock and a hard place, not because God has lost control, but because “it ain’t about you.” God says he will get glory over Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen, and Egypt will know that he is the Lord. The trouble is not finally about Israel’s fear. The trouble is about God making his name known through their deliverance.
Israel sees Pharaoh coming and becomes afraid because what they thought they were delivered from is now right behind them. Their past is catching up. Their bondage is calling them back. Their fear makes Egypt look better than freedom, and slavery look safer than the wilderness. But Moses tells the people, “Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord.” Fear may be present, but fear cannot be allowed to overtake faith. Standing firm means refusing to go back after fighting too hard, praying too much, and coming too far.
God tells Moses to stop crying out and tell the people to go forward. The Red Sea is still in front of them, but God’s word is stronger than what they see. Moses must lift up his staff and stretch his hand over the thing that has held them back, and what looked like a barrier becomes a highway. The thing that stopped them becomes the road to destiny.
God also shifts the angel and the cloud from in front of Israel to behind them. God puts himself between his people and the enemy. The cloud becomes darkness to Egypt, but light to Israel. The same thing God uses to black out the enemy, God uses to light up the life of his people. God has their back, and because God fights for them, Israel can go forward.
Key Takeaways
- 1. God sometimes takes the long way The long way is not always punishment. God may be keeping his people from a fight that would send them back to what once held them. The longer road can become the place where trust is built, strength is formed, and relationship with God becomes deeper than the desire for a shortcut. [63:22]
- 2. It ain’t about the sufferer The hard place can feel personal, but Exodus shows that God is working for his own glory through the lives of his people. The trial becomes a witness that God is a deliverer, healer, provider, and way maker. The blessing comes, but the glory belongs to God first. [65:46]
- 3. Going back is not an option Fear can make slavery look safe and freedom look dangerous. The pull of the past often sounds reasonable when the present feels impossible. But the soul that has fought for peace, healing, and deliverance must not trade future freedom for temporary relief. [75:00]
- 4. Stand before moving forward Moses does not tell Israel to pretend there is no fear. Moses tells Israel not to let fear rule the moment. Standing firm means holding the ground of faith long enough to see God act, especially when the enemy is behind and the sea is still in front. [77:20]
- 5. God has their back The cloud and the angel shift behind Israel, and that shift reveals God’s protection in a new way. What looks like darkness to the enemy becomes light for God’s people. God can use the same circumstance to block what is chasing his people and illuminate the way forward. [93:17]
