Stand By Me" - 2 Timothy 4:16-18 | WCFI Communion Sunday Service | August 2, 2026

Worship becomes a little peek into the throne of God. Heaven awaits the saints, yes, but worship lets God’s people taste something of heaven right where they are. Through Jesus Christ and through the Holy Spirit, God receives people “just as they are,” and His presence makes the place a place of joy, release, and freedom.

The old song “Stand By Me” opens the question. If the night has come, the land is dark, and no one is standing beside a person, what happens then? Second Timothy 4:16-18 answers that question through Paul, who stands before a Roman court because of the gospel. Paul says, “At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me.” The truth is not only a message. The truth becomes a lifestyle, an attitude, a testimony, especially when heartbreak comes, when people walk away, or when a person feels alone even in a crowd.

Paul calls Timothy to be patient, not personal. Desertion hurts, but Paul says, “May it not be held against them.” God saved and called His people not because of anything done, but because of His own purpose and grace. So even those who walk away remain under God’s dealing, God’s timing, and God’s purpose.

Paul also teaches augmented reliance. Augmented reality adds something to what the eyes already see, but faith sees the physical and the spiritual together. Paul says, “The Lord stood at my side and gave me strength.” The Lord’s presence is not a theory. The Lord’s strength gives courage to stand when no one else stands. The Spirit of God gives power, love, and discipline. Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, gives confidence. The Word of God, which is not chained, equips the servant of God for every good work.

Paul also calls Timothy to be a finisher, not a quitter. The Lord will rescue from every evil attack and bring His servant safely into His heavenly kingdom. Even death cannot cancel that promise. Jesus Himself knows what it means to be alone. Jesus stood before Pilate alone, was scourged alone, was mocked alone, and was crucified while followers stood at a distance. Because Christ has been there, the prayer “stand by me” is not empty. The good fight is standing even when a person feels all alone, because the Lord stands beside the one who stands for the truth.
