Psalm 1 opens the whole book of Psalms by putting two ways in front of a person. The blessed life is not some vague religious dream. The blessed man refuses a certain progression, walking in ungodly counsel, standing in the path of sinners, and sitting in the seat of the scornful.

That progression matters. Walking begins as casual exposure. Compromise usually does not start with somebody waking up and deciding to wreck a marriage, ruin a life, or chase destruction. Compromise begins with proximity. Standing moves from exposure into agreement. Where a person positions himself determines what influences him. Sitting becomes identity, belonging, and formation. A person cannot sit in compromise and stand in conviction at the same time.

Psalm 1 presses deeper by showing that counsel is what a person listens to, path is where a person lingers, and seat is where a person settles. Wrong voices create wrong directions. The voices entertained eventually become the beliefs defended. A life that continually consumes darkness should not expect to consistently produce light. Social media becomes one of the clearest examples of the seat of mockers, a place where outrage, cynicism, comparison, and poison disciple the heart one scroll at a time.

The blessed man is different because his delight is in the law of the Lord. Duty may change behavior, but delight changes desire. Devotion is built in the secret place before conviction is displayed in public. A person does not develop conviction in the moment of testing. Conviction is strengthened through the Word, prayer, worship, and repeated surrender at the feet of Jesus.

Psalm 1 does not call for removal only. Bad influence must be removed, but truth must replace it. Sin is not merely starved, righteousness is fed. Meditation means repetition until it becomes revelation. God is not looking for speed readers, but soul feeders, people who let the Word feed the mind until it forms the life.

The tree planted by streams of water shows what stability looks like. The tree is not drifting, not chasing trends, not being uprooted by every opinion. A tree that keeps relocating never develops deep roots. The ungodly are not so. They are like chaff, blown around by whatever way culture moves. But the Lord knows the way of the righteous. The righteous may stand alone for a season, but they stand approved for eternity. When all has been done to stand, God calls the righteous to stand anyway.
