Joshua, Corinthians, and Ephesians stand together with one word for uncertain times: stand anyway. Joshua hears God speak after Moses is dead, after the legendary lawgiver has checked out of here, after Israel stands between one closed chapter and another unopened door. God does not give Joshua the whole road map, does not promise there will be no battles, and does not tell him everybody will like him. God gives him something better than information: “I will be with you.”

Uncertain times make people want details. The human heart wants to know what happens next, when it happens, how it happens, and preferably before it happens. But faith does not always work like that. God sometimes gives no explanation at all, only enough light for the next step and the promise of his presence. The testimony of the saints says that doors closed, doctor reports came back wrong, people walked away, and yet God was with them then, so God will not abandon them now.

Paul’s word to Corinth says to walk by faith and not by sight. Paul does not say run or sprint. Paul says walk, because faith keeps moving when the eyes cannot see the whole way. Sight says, “Show me first, then I’ll move.” Faith says, “God said move, and the feet start walking.” Faith does not deny reality. Faith declares that reality does not get the final word. God does.

Ephesians brings the fight into view. Paul says the battle is bigger than flesh and blood, so God’s people must stop fighting the wrong enemy. A husband is not the enemy. A wife is not the enemy. Children are not the enemy. The church down the street is not the enemy. Spiritual battles cannot be won with gossip, manipulation, arguing, hatred, or posts. Some battles require the whole armor of God.

Paul’s command to stand speaks to the “having done all” season. Prayer has been prayed, tears have been cried, forgiveness has been offered, conversations have been had, sacrifices have been made, and still the question remains, “What now?” God’s word answers, stand. Sometimes standing is the victory. The enemy thought grief, betrayal, disappointment, or weariness would take the saint out, but the testimony still says God kept his child.

The cross gives the final certainty. Friday looked uncertain, Saturday looked uncertain, and the tomb looked uncertain, but uncertainty is not the same thing as defeat. Early Sunday morning, Christ got up with all power in his hands. Because he got up, Beth Eden can stand, the believer can stand, and faith can stand on Christ the solid rock.
