Bible Reading
2 Kings 19:14-19 Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of the LORD and spread it before the LORD. And Hezekiah prayed before the LORD and said: “O LORD, the God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made heaven and earth. Incline your ear, O LORD, and hear; open your eyes, O LORD, and see; and hear the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to mock the living God. Truly, O LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands and have cast their gods into the fire, for they were not gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone. Therefore they were destroyed. So now, O LORD our God, save us, please, from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, O LORD, are God alone.”
[09:37] [15:12] [56:35]1 Kings 18:30-39 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” And all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that had been thrown down. Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD came, saying, “Israel shall be your name,” and with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD. And he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two seahs of seed. And he put the wood in order and cut the bull in pieces and laid it on the wood. And he said, “Fill four jars with water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood.” And he said, “Do it a second time.” And they did it a second time. And he said, “Do it a third time.” And they did it a third time. And the water ran around the altar and filled the trench also with water. And at the time of the offering of the oblation, Elijah the prophet came near and said, “O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word. Answer me, O LORD, answer me, that this people may know that you, O LORD, are God, and that you have turned their hearts back.” Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, “The LORD, he is God; the LORD, he is God.”
[17:44] [21:48]Romans 8:26-27 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
[07:17] [27:18]Observation questions
- What did Hezekiah physically do with the threatening letter before he began to pray, and what truths about God did he speak first?
- In Elijah’s rebuilding of the altar, what details showed both the broken condition of Israel’s worship and Elijah’s desire to leave no doubt about who sent the fire? [20:15]
- According to Romans 8:26-27, what does the Holy Spirit do when believers are weak and do not know what to pray?
- What contrast is made between prayer that is only “talking, talking, talking” and prayer that includes listening, stillness, and surrender? [08:20]
Interpretation questions
- Hezekiah had authority, warriors, and resources, yet he spread the letter before the Lord. What does his action show about the kind of crisis that must be placed before God rather than managed only by human strength? [12:47]
- Hezekiah asked for rescue so that the kingdoms of the earth would know that the Lord alone is God. How does praying for God’s name to be known change the focus of a request for help? [17:19]
- Elijah repaired the altar before fire fell. Why might restored worship, repentance, and remembrance of God’s people be important when a community is asking God to move powerfully? [19:46]
- Romans says the Spirit intercedes according to God’s will. How can this truth give hope to someone whose pain, diagnosis, family situation, or fear has left them without the right words? [07:07]
Application questions
- What is the “letter” in your life right now—a need, fear, relationship, diagnosis, financial concern, or decision—that you have been carrying mostly by yourself? What could it look like to spread it before the Lord this week? [39:20]
- Prayer comes before every good idea. Is there an idea, plan, purchase, conversation, or attempt to fix something that you need to place before God in prayer before moving ahead? [23:11]
- Where have you been trying to control another person—perhaps a spouse, child, coworker, or friend—rather than seeking God’s work in your own heart? What is one specific way to let go of that control without withdrawing love? [31:45]
- When words run out, how do you usually respond: by becoming busy, shutting down, worrying, or asking the Holy Spirit for help? What simple words could help you begin to surrender in those moments? [25:24]
- The Holy Spirit is close to every believer, not far away. What practice could help you become more aware of His presence this week: sitting quietly, reading Scripture slowly, taking a prayer walk, or pausing before reacting? [27:21]
- A practical need can become an access point to know God more deeply. How could the current needs in your home, church, or community become opportunities to seek God’s presence and give Him the credit? [50:04]
- God’s past faithfulness gives His people a history to stand on. What is one specific time God carried you, provided for you, or sustained you that you need to remember when facing today’s need? [36:39]
