There is a real spiritual battle in the world, with forces of darkness seeking to oppose the work of God, but Jesus has ultimate authority and power to deliver and set people free. Even when spiritual opposition seems overwhelming or confusing, believers can trust in the name and authority of Jesus to bring freedom and victory. The story of Paul casting out the spirit from the slave girl in Philippi reminds us that the enemy’s power is real, but it is no match for the authority of Christ, and that God’s deliverance is available to all who call on Him. [20:01]
Acts 16:16-18 (ESV)
As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling. She followed Paul and us, crying out, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation.” And this she kept doing for many days. Paul, having become greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And it came out that very hour.
Reflection: Where in your life do you sense spiritual opposition or darkness, and how can you intentionally invite the authority of Jesus into that situation today?
Believers are called to recognize the reality of spiritual warfare and to stand firm by putting on the full armor of God, knowing their identity and authority in Christ. When facing fear, oppression, or spiritual attack, it is not by our own strength but by the power of Jesus’ name and the truth of who we are in Him that we can stand victorious. Teaching these truths to the next generation, as well as practicing them ourselves, equips us to resist the enemy and walk in freedom. [28:55]
Ephesians 6:10-12 (ESV)
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
Reflection: What specific piece of the armor of God do you most need to “put on” today, and how can you remind yourself of your identity in Christ as you face challenges?
When circumstances turn dark or painful, choosing to praise God and pray can be a powerful witness and a source of strength, even when it seems illogical or difficult. Paul and Silas, after being beaten and imprisoned, responded not with despair but with worship, and their faith in adversity became a testimony to those around them. Praising God in hardship opens the door for His presence and power to be revealed in unexpected ways. [41:00]
Acts 16:25 (ESV)
About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.
Reflection: Think of a current struggle or disappointment—how can you choose to praise God in the midst of it today, and what might that look like practically?
God’s deliverance is not only about rescue from danger or oppression, but also about bringing people into new life, joy, and relationship with Him. The jailer in Philippi was saved from self-harm and despair, but even more, he and his whole household were brought to faith and baptized, experiencing the joy of salvation. God’s power to save is active and available, transforming lives and families in ways that go beyond what we can imagine. [45:16]
Acts 16:29-34 (ESV)
And the jailer called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas. Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their wounds; and he was baptized at once, he and all his family. Then he brought them up into his house and set food before them. And he rejoiced along with his entire household that he had believed in God.
Reflection: Who in your life needs to experience the joy and transformation of God’s deliverance, and how can you pray or reach out to them this week?
God is always at work, moving in ways that may be unseen or unexpected, and He invites His people to be attentive, open, and responsive to His leading. By opening our hearts, minds, and ears to God, we can become more aware of His presence and activity, and join Him in what He is doing in our lives and communities. Like Paul and Silas, we are called to be people who notice God’s movement and follow His path, trusting that His power is greater than any opposition we face. [47:25]
Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV)
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
Reflection: What is one way you can intentionally open your heart and mind to notice God’s movement in your life today, and how will you respond if He prompts you to act?
The grace and peace of the Lord Jesus Christ are with us, even when our numbers are few or when we feel the absence of others. Today, we journeyed with Paul, Silas, and Luke in Acts 16, witnessing the many ways God delivers His people. In Philippi, Paul and his companions encountered a slave girl possessed by a spirit that enabled her to predict the future. Though her words seemed to affirm their mission, her spirit was not of God but of the enemy, and her persistent interference became a spiritual battle. Paul, in the authority of Jesus’ name, commanded the spirit to leave her, and she was set free—demonstrating the reality of spiritual warfare and the greater power of Christ.
This encounter reminds us that the spiritual world is real, even if we are often unaware of it in our daily lives. Sometimes, God allows us to see the enemy’s schemes more clearly, especially when we step outside our comfort zones or minister in places where darkness is more evident. Personal stories of spiritual attack and deliverance, both in my own family and in ministry, have taught me that every believer, not just pastors or those with special training, has authority in Jesus’ name. Teaching my daughter to stand firm in Christ and claim His authority brought her freedom from fear and deepened her faith, illustrating that spiritual victory is available to all who trust in Jesus.
After the deliverance of the slave girl, Paul and Silas faced severe persecution. They were beaten and imprisoned, yet their response was to pray and sing hymns to God in the darkness of their cell. Their worship became a powerful witness to the other prisoners and set the stage for another act of God’s deliverance: an earthquake opened the prison doors, yet no one fled. The jailer, on the brink of despair, was stopped from harming himself and, through the testimony and compassion of Paul and Silas, came to faith in Christ along with his entire household.
Through these events, we see that God’s power is not only able to break spiritual chains but also to transform lives and bring salvation. Our call is to remain open to God’s movement, to stand firm in spiritual battles, and to praise Him in every circumstance, trusting that He is always at work for our deliverance and the deliverance of others.
``And I said to my daughter, You need to put on the armor of God. And so we prayed through the armor of God. And I said, Not only that, you need to know who you are. You belong to Jesus. You belong to Jesus. And in Jesus' name, every knee bows, every tongue confesses. In Jesus' name, he is the highest authority. He is King of kings, Lord of lords. And everyone in the dark world knows it. In other words, you have the trump card. You have Jesus.

And I want you to learn how to pray in Jesus' name and command in Jesus' name. I command you, whoever you are, to leave this house and leave me alone in the name of Jesus. And so we practiced it because we had just, what I call, cleaned out the room. And I said, Teresa, I'm not going to be there for you always. What if I'm gone somewhere? You need to take authority in the name of Jesus. And the next night, she was able to do so. And she woke up beaming and she said, Dad, it worked.

Church, that was to me a vivid illustration of the power of the enemy and the greater power of our God. Church, I tell you this because you don't need a seminary degree to exercise the authority that you have in Jesus. You have the Holy Spirit in you. You have the Son of God, His Spirit in you. He died on the cross for you. And you have His authority in you.

And it was one of the most delightful times for me to just see the demons quieted. Paul was annoyed. This demon spirit was interrupting the gospel. And he turned around. He said, in the name of Jesus, I command you to leave. And the demon left.

About midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God and the others in prison were listening to them. So here they are just on their backs, probably backs bleeding from the beating that they had, laying on their back, had to be excruciatingly painful and they decide to sing and pray. What a witness. What a testimony. Can you just hear those voices sort of going through the cells of that prison?

When things are going great, Lord, I sing your praise, but when things turn dark, Lord, I'm going to praise you too. When the darkness closes in, Lord, I will say, blessed be the name of the Lord.

The only thing we can think of is that they were so struck by the presence of God. They watched Paul and Silas singing in the worst scenario. They watched God bring an earthquake. They watched all of their chains just fall off. They watched the doors open. And I think they were so struck by God's movement and activity that they couldn't move, that they were like not even thinking about running away. They wanted to see what God was doing next.

And that's the third delivery. The jailer and all of his household came to receive and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. Our God saves. Our God delivers. Our God is active in this world in ways that we barely can imagine. God's power is manifested. God's power is manifested. and we have a joy of the Lord.

How do we respond to this? I don't have a real quick, this is what we must do. I think we need to note this and just say our God is powerful. Our God moves, and to open up our hearts, our ears, our mind, and say, God, show us. Help us to follow in your path. Help us to be people like Paul and Silas who can see you moving, see you working.
