Bible ReadingEphesians 6:10–18 “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,”
[01:01:30] [01:06:55] [01:15:27] [01:22:22]Ephesians 5:22–6:9 “Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother’ (this is the first commandment with a promise), ‘that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.’ Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Bondservants, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ, not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man, knowing that whatever good anyone does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether he is a bondservant or is free. Masters, do the same to them, and stop your threatening, knowing that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and that there is no partiality with him.”
[00:44:33] [00:48:50] [00:52:18] [51:30]John 15:4–5 “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”
[01:19:23]Observation questions- In Ephesians 5:22–6:9, how often does Paul connect ordinary relationships and work to “the Lord,” and what commands does he give to those who hold power?
- What kinds of spiritual enemies does Paul name in Ephesians 6:12, and what does he clearly say believers are not wrestling against? [01:06:55]
- What repeated command appears in Ephesians 6:11–14, and what are believers told to put on or take up in order to do it? [01:22:22]
- In John 15:4–5, what happens to a branch that is separated from the vine, and what does Jesus promise about the branch that abides in him? [01:19:23]
Interpretation questions- Paul tells masters to stop threatening because both they and those under them have one Master in heaven. How does this truth challenge the way a parent, supervisor, teacher, or ministry leader uses authority? [51:30]
- Paul does not deny that people sin, act selfishly, or cause real pain. What is the difference between holding someone responsible for wrong actions and treating that person as the ultimate enemy? [01:08:08]
- Paul describes the devil’s “schemes,” which means there is intention and strategy behind temptation and spiritual pressure. What areas of life seem especially vulnerable to lies, division, compromise, discouragement, or distraction? [01:13:23]
- What does it mean to be “strong in the Lord” rather than merely trying to be strong for the Lord? How does John 15 help explain this difference? [01:19:23]
Application questions- Think about a relationship where frustration has been building—a spouse, child, parent, coworker, neighbor, or fellow church member. How might it change the next conversation to remember that person is not the ultimate enemy? [01:08:08]
- Where do you currently have power or influence over someone else? What would it look like this week to give that person dignity, stop using threats or pressure, and remember that Christ is Master over both of you? [51:30]
- Where are you most tempted to rely on white-knuckle effort—trying harder, making bigger promises, or depending on self-discipline alone? What could abiding in Christ look like in that particular struggle through Scripture, prayer, confession, and dependence on him? [01:15:27]
- Consider your marriage, family, work, friendships, or personal holiness. Where do you sense a need for a faithful plan rather than simply reacting when trouble comes? What is one simple, Christ-centered step you could take this week? [01:12:15]
- “Standing” is not doing nothing; it is holding the ground Christ has won. In what area are you tempted either to retreat in discouragement or to charge ahead in anger? What would it look like to stand in truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, God’s Word, and prayer? [01:23:25]
- Who in your family or close circle needs prayer because they are facing temptation, suffering, confusion, or spiritual pressure? How can the group pray specifically and continue to support that person? [01:14:45]
- Jesus has already won the decisive victory through his cross and resurrection. How does that truth give hope for one hard situation you are facing right now? [01:25:38]
