The Scene of Our Spiritual War

Paul’s word “finally” in Ephesians 6:10 marks a real turn in the letter. That little word means “to the rest,” and Paul uses it to move from one concern to another. Ephesians has just been dealing with relationships: believers with believers, wives and husbands, parents and children, servants and masters in the first century workplace. Then Paul turns and says, “be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.” The connection matters. Relationships are the stuff of life, and relationships are the stage where Christian growth, holiness, and godliness get played out.

Spiritual warfare is not mainly spooky talk about sound systems, strange stories, or sensational things behind the veil. Spiritual warfare is often fought right in the middle of marriage, church life, family life, friendships, and work life. The spouse is not the enemy. The fellow believer is not the enemy. Paul says the struggle is not against flesh and blood, and that means the devil wants people to mistake the person in front of them for the real adversary behind the conflict.

Genesis 3 shows the pattern from the beginning. Satan comes as a serpent and aims first at humanity’s relationship with God. His question, “Did God actually say?” attacks God’s word. His lie attacks God’s goodness. His tactic creates a suspicious mind toward the Lord. When Adam and Eve take the bait, their fellowship with God is broken, and then their fellowship with one another fractures. Adam blames the woman, and the consequences of sin bring contrariness into marriage.

Satan’s endgame has always been to rob God of glory and to reverse God’s design. Isaiah 14 shows Lucifer’s pride, his “I will” rebellion, and his desire to take what belongs to God alone. Job shows the same goal in another way, because Satan wants Job to curse God to His face. Second Corinthians 4 shows that Satan blinds unbelievers from seeing the glory of Christ.

Genesis 3:15 also shows why Satan hates the offspring of the woman. A baby would come to crush the serpent’s head, and that promised child explains Satan’s hatred of babies, his work behind Cain’s murder of Abel, and his continuing warfare against God’s redemptive plan. The great commandment says to love God and love neighbor. Satan wants to reverse it. God gives armor because His people need to be aware and prepared.
