Spiritual Vitality: Transforming Leaders Through Holiness and Surrender

Summary

In our time together, we delved into the profound concept of spiritual formation and the spiritual vitality of leaders, particularly those in ministry. Spiritual formation is not just a buzzword; it is the process by which our inner selves are shaped and molded by the Holy Spirit. This journey is essential for pastors and Christian workers who are called to lead others in faith. We explored the barriers that prevent us from becoming all that God intends for us to be, such as ego, lack of accountability, and unresolved family issues. These obstacles can hinder our spiritual growth and effectiveness in ministry.

A spiritually vital leader is characterized by three key pursuits: holiness, peace, and self-surrender. Holiness involves striving to be like God in righteousness, as Paul writes in Ephesians. It is about seeing ourselves as God sees us—holy and beloved. Peace is about emptying our minds of chaos and filling them with God's truth, as Isaiah 26:3 reminds us. Finally, self-surrender is about letting go of ego and recognizing that our ministry is not our own but God's. This surrender allows us to focus on God's work rather than our achievements.

We also discussed the importance of understanding the significance of our calling. Whether leading a small congregation or a large one, the significance lies in bringing God's life into the world. Success in ministry should not be measured by numbers or size but by our faithfulness to God's calling and the impact of His work through us. This perspective frees us from the burden of seeking approval from others and allows us to rest in God's presence and action.

Ultimately, the person we are becoming is more important than what we accomplish. Our spiritual formation is about becoming more like Christ, and this transformation is what God desires from us. As we grow in spiritual vitality, we find peace, joy, and strength in our relationship with God, enabling us to serve others more effectively.

Key Takeaways:

1. Pursuit of Holiness: Holiness is about striving to be like God in righteousness and seeing ourselves as He sees us—holy and beloved. This pursuit requires us to align our lives with God's truth and live out our calling with integrity and humility. [05:17]

Quotes

The pursuit of becoming all that God has in mind for us to be the second is this, I think the search for peace each of us in our own lives want peace, there is so much chaos in the world today, and as I talk to pastors around the country the one thing that they say to me is HB how can I be peaceful when I preach it and I don't live it. [00:05:53]

The surrender of self, there's so much in the word about unless we're willing to die we can't live or unless we're willing to sacrifice we can't give or the last shall be first and the first shall be last and all that kind of thing, one of the things that I noticed also because there seems to be a lot of ego in Ministry today. [00:07:18]

The Lord walked up and he tapped you on the shoulder and he said will you follow me, and when he said that, he had something in mind for you, it wasn't that you would be panicked all the time and stressed out and burdened down and just fighting the battle of the sin and the world and all that that's not what he had in mind. [00:10:50]

We want you before these two hours have come to a conclusion, to be able to hold a mirror up to your soul and to your heart, and to see you in such a way that not only have you developed even a closer relationship with the Lord, but you understand a little bit more about yourself, and what those potholes are that create in you. [00:11:49]

Vitality in that area means that we are drawing our life from God, that our walk with the Lord actually gives us what we need in order for that part of our Lives to be good and right or peaceful you use the word Holiness also fits here we really need to rework that concept so that it it comes up to date and basically Holiness just means. [00:16:55]

We have to understand no matter if we're if we have a church with 35 people in it or 35 000 or whatever, we have that calling of God on us to bring his life into the world and to bring people into his life, and you know the significance of that is so great today because when we think about just the message that we bring to people. [00:20:38]

I do not have a Ministry God has a Ministry and I get to be a part of that and to identify what God is doing in my time, and to be able to know that he has called me into that and then be able to look at what he does not what I do is the secret and, I would just say well I'll just say with no exception once you get into that position. [00:23:57]

We are successful if God is accomplishing what he wants to accomplish as we go along in our work, our day-to-day existence and this just turns up such wonderful surprising things when we see the results of our labors in those terms, because we are then totally free of approval and disapproval from men and women that's tough it's tough isn't it it really is. [00:25:45]

The person we're becoming is more important than what we accomplish, because really what God gets out of our life is the person we become, and in fact that's about what we get out of our Lives including the personal relationships we have with others, and if we just remember that, and and surrender that to the Lord too because we don't want to become. [00:35:26]

The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole Earth to show himself strong on the behalf of those whose hearts Are Holy sat on him see that's like the Isaiah verse it sure is yeah and Jesus said to the woman well the Lord is looking for people, he's he's out looking for people who will worship Him in spirit and in truth. [00:36:25]

The joy of the Lord is our strength, and you know we I think we're all drawn to Joy but we don't think a lot about the fact that it really is it's part of what gives us the strength to withstand most temptation is strong in us because it promises Escape From Pain or an Avenue to Joy yeah and so the joy of the Lord really is spiritual strength. [00:54:41]

The Lord is my shepherd but for a lot of people even a lot of us in church ministry and I think this gets the part of the tension you're talking about when I think of turning my mind towards God I do not associate that with joy life easiness I associate there with I'm supposed to do that when I grew up in church they said do that.
