Spiritual Readiness for Christ's Sudden Return

Summary

In today's message, we explored the concept of readiness for Christ's return, drawing parallels between unexpected visitors and the suddenness of the Lord's coming. Just as we might feel unprepared for a surprise visit, we must ensure we are spiritually prepared for the return of Jesus. The Bible, particularly in 2 Peter 3, emphasizes the importance of living holy and godly lives as we anticipate this event. This involves setting ourselves apart for God's purposes, striving to be spotless and blameless, and maintaining peace with God.

We delved into the metaphor of fire as a symbol of judgment, reflecting on the potential for literal destruction in our world today. This serves as a sobering reminder of the urgency to live in a way that honors God. The call to holiness is not about achieving perfection but about making a sincere effort to align our lives with God's will. This involves confessing our sins, seeking forgiveness, and striving to live in obedience to Christ.

Furthermore, we discussed the importance of being on guard against deception and false teachings. Just as Peter learned from his own failures, we must remain spiritually alert and grounded in truth to avoid being led astray. Growing in the grace and knowledge of Jesus is crucial for maintaining our spiritual focus and readiness.

Finally, we are encouraged to reflect on our spiritual growth. Are we moving towards holiness and godliness, or are we being swayed by the world's ways? Our church community provides resources for growth and discipleship, and it's vital to take advantage of these opportunities. As we await Christ's return, let us strive to live lives that reflect His character, bringing glory to God and drawing others to Him.

Devotional

Day 1: Spiritual Readiness for Christ's Return
Living in anticipation of Christ's return requires a conscious effort to be spiritually prepared, much like preparing for an unexpected visitor. This readiness involves living a life that is holy and godly, setting oneself apart for God's purposes, and striving to be spotless and blameless. It is not about achieving perfection but about making a sincere effort to align one's life with God's will. This includes confessing sins, seeking forgiveness, and striving to live in obedience to Christ, resulting in peace with God. The urgency of this preparation is underscored by the suddenness of Christ's return, which will come like a thief in the night. [44:23]

2 Peter 3:11-12 (ESV): "Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn!"

Reflection: What specific steps can you take today to ensure you are spiritually ready for Christ's return, and how can you incorporate these into your daily routine?

Day 2: Fire as a Symbol of Judgment
The Bible uses fire as a powerful metaphor for judgment, serving as a reminder of the potential for literal destruction in our world. This imagery is a sobering call to live in a way that honors God and prepares us for His return. The urgency of this message is clear: we must not be complacent in our spiritual lives but instead strive to live in holiness and godliness. This involves a sincere effort to align our lives with God's will, confessing our sins, seeking forgiveness, and living in obedience to Christ. The metaphor of fire underscores the seriousness of this call to holiness and the need for spiritual readiness. [48:12]

Malachi 4:1 (ESV): "For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch."

Reflection: How does the metaphor of fire as judgment impact your understanding of God's call to holiness, and what changes can you make in your life to align more closely with His will?

Day 3: The Effort in Holiness
While perfection is unattainable, believers are called to make every effort to live holy and blameless lives. This involves a continuous process of confessing sins, seeking forgiveness, and striving to live in obedience to Christ. The goal is to maintain peace with God and to live a life that reflects His character. This effort in holiness is not about legalism but about a sincere desire to align one's life with God's will. It requires vigilance and a commitment to spiritual growth, recognizing that holiness is a journey rather than a destination. [56:26]

Hebrews 12:14 (ESV): "Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord."

Reflection: In what areas of your life do you find it most challenging to pursue holiness, and how can you invite God to help you in these areas today?

Day 4: Guarding Against Deception
Believers must remain spiritually alert and grounded in truth to avoid being led astray by false teachings. This requires a commitment to growing in the grace and knowledge of Jesus, as well as a willingness to learn from past mistakes. Peter's own experiences serve as a reminder of the importance of staying focused and keeping one's head in the game. By remaining vigilant and discerning, believers can protect themselves from deception and maintain their spiritual focus and readiness. [57:37]

Colossians 2:8 (ESV): "See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ."

Reflection: What steps can you take to ensure you are not led astray by false teachings, and how can you strengthen your foundation in the truth of God's Word?

Day 5: Growth in Grace and Knowledge
Growing in the grace and knowledge of Jesus is crucial for maintaining spiritual focus and readiness. This involves a commitment to spiritual growth and a willingness to take advantage of opportunities for discipleship within the church community. Believers are encouraged to reflect on their spiritual growth and to consider whether they are moving towards holiness and godliness or being swayed by the world's ways. By prioritizing spiritual growth and seeking to reflect Christ's character, believers can bring glory to God and draw others to Him. [01:02:01]

2 Peter 3:18 (ESV): "But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen."

Reflection: How can you actively pursue growth in the grace and knowledge of Jesus, and what specific steps can you take to engage more deeply with your church community for discipleship?

Quotes

Just as we might feel unprepared for a surprise visit, we must ensure we are spiritually prepared for the return of Jesus. The Bible, particularly in 2 Peter 3, emphasizes the importance of living holy and godly lives as we anticipate this event. This involves setting ourselves apart for God's purposes, striving to be spotless and blameless, and maintaining peace with God. [00:44:23]

The Bible tells us that Christ's return and the day of the Lord will drop in like a thief, that is, when Christ returns, he won't be calling ahead for an appointment. He won't be texting to make sure it's okay. He won't be asking your secretary if you can make room for him in your calendar. [00:43:29]

Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. [00:45:31]

Fire is a Biblical metaphor for judgment, and verse seven, a verse we didn't read, makes it clear that that's what Peter has in mind in this passage. He says in verse seven, by the same word, the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. [00:48:12]

We can't ever become everything that God created us to be and intends for us to be until we are committed to living holy and godly lives, to yielding ourselves to God's purpose for our lives. Now let me share with you an old illustration on that. If you take a $5 bar of steel worth $5 and you make horseshoes out of it, well then it's worth 10 or 20 or more. [00:52:11]

Our commitment to holiness is going to determine whether we become Christians of minimal, moderate, or significant spiritual influence. Can people see lives of holiness and godliness when they look at us? Do they see that in our experience, in our lives? Does it show? [00:54:06]

We all know that we aren't perfect, that we can't live sinless lives because if we could, we could earn our own salvation. But remember, the gospel is opposed to earning; it is not opposed to effort. That's why the Bible can say make every effort to live spotless, blameless lives. [00:56:26]

Be on your guard, be alert, keep your head in the game. A long time ago, I learned an important and embarrassing lesson on that very point when I was just a boy in a little league basketball, still really learning the game. I can remember it as if it were yesterday. [00:57:37]

We learn that we can stay on track, we can maintain our holy and godly lives by loving the truth, by believing the truth, and by refusing to fall for falsehoods and lies. Peter is saying keep your head in the game because it's easy to trip and fall. [01:00:14]

Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The last instruction of this little letter: grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Now don't pass over that directive too quickly. Don't miss the importance of growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. [01:02:01]

The world around us is growing increasingly more hateful and vindictive as they take sides against one another, but we are supposed to grow more gracious and more knowledgeable of our Lord and Savior Jesus. So in which direction do you see yourself moving this morning, toward the way of the world or toward the way of holiness and godliness? [01:02:01]

God help us be prepared, for we know not the day or the hour when you will come for us. God forgive us for our sins, help us to recognize the truth and turn away from error, and help us to live in such a way that this world will be drawn to you because they see you in us. [01:05:01]
