Discover Your Spiritual Gifts and Serve Your Church

The challenge of serving others starts with a simple tension: people do not naturally want to serve, they want to be served. The human heart wants to be the main character of the story. Serving others means getting over that self-centered pull, and that is not easy.

God does not leave believers to serve in their own willpower. Jesus promised the Holy Spirit as the advocate, the helper, and the one who leads into truth. The Spirit gives power for witness and power for everyday obedience. The same Spirit who comes to live in believers also gives them a special ability to serve someone else.

Paul says in 1 Corinthians 12 that “a spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.” That means every believer has been given a spiritual gift. Ministry is not for a small group of insiders while everyone else sits and watches. The church is not supposed to be divided into ministers and attenders. Everyone in Christ has the ability to minister to someone else, even without “a microphone strapped to his face.”

Paul also uses the image of the body in Romans 12. The church is one body with many parts, and each part has a special function. A hand cannot be the whole body. An eye cannot be the whole body. Every gift works together so the church can thrive.

Spiritual gifts show up in all kinds of ways: hospitality, administration, service, teaching, shepherding, encouragement, leadership, giving, mercy, wisdom, and more. Certain gifts may already be obvious because something comes alive when a person serves in that way. Other people may have noticed it too. A spiritual gifts assessment can help bring clarity, but the point is not just discovery. The point is discovery that leads to service.

Serving does bring disruption. Saying yes to serving can disrupt a schedule, a routine, and even a way of thinking about church. But disruption can be a good thing. Serving can turn a big church small, create community, give purpose, and help a person belong. The bottom line is simple: “everybody is gifted with something to serve somebody.” The challenge is to discover how God has gifted each believer and then serve the church.
