Just as the moon has no light of its own but mirrors the sun, Christians are called to shine by reflecting Jesus. To walk as children of light means intentionally aligning with Christ’s truth, rejecting values absorbed accidentally from culture. Discipleship is training that sticks, the kind of training that gives believers tools to become the men and women of God that God created them to be. Discipleship is not just sitting and soaking and enjoying good stuff from the Lord. Discipleship is being trained to train somebody else, becoming spiritual parents who raise children in the Lord who will raise children in the Lord.

The Great Commission gives that mission real weight. Jesus told His disciples to go make disciples who do everything He taught, and that means a believer who is not personally discipling somebody is not living up to the purpose God created that believer for. Spiritual parenting illuminates the walk of life and teaches the contrast between the righteous path and the wicked path. Proverbs makes that contrast plain: the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, shining brighter and brighter, while the way of the wicked is darkness, and they do not even know what makes them stumble.

Darkness represents lies, deception, death, ignorance, confusion, foolishness, evil, danger, sorrow, and fear. Light represents truth, life, knowledge, understanding, wisdom, goodness, safety, and faith. Discipleship teaches that difference intentionally, because values do not come pre-installed with a switch that suddenly makes right and wrong obvious. Accidental values get picked up “like germs off the street,” from movies, music, family, teachers, coworkers, and the whole mess of influences that shape a life. Christian values have to be formed intentionally from the owner’s manual, the Word of God.

John 8:12 puts Jesus right in the middle of the Feast of Tabernacles, when Israel remembered the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night. Jesus stood under those massive lights in the Court of the Women and said, “I am the light of the world.” That was not a small claim. Jesus was saying Yahweh, glory of God, Messiah, creator, giver of life and light. John 1 says the Word was with God, the Word was God, and everything made came through Him. Life only comes from life, and Jesus is the true light who enlightens every person coming into the world.

Believers become children of light by believing in Jesus, but believers are not the source of light. Christians are like the moon, not the sun. The moon only shines when it reflects the sun, and the world can get in the way. The shadow of the world can make a child of light look like less than God made that child to be.

Ephesians 5 calls children of light to imitate God, walk in love, reject immorality, impurity, greed, filthy talk, and coarse joking, and learn what is pleasing to the Lord. Discipleship is that learning process. Spiritual parents help believers see what does not reflect well on Jesus and learn how to walk as children of light.
