Nothing Can Separate Us: The Spirit's Comfort

Romans 8 stands right in the middle of Paul’s great letter, a letter filled with the best advice he had to offer. Paul’s last epistle carries the weight of a man who has grown in wisdom, and Romans carries that clear Reformation truth that opened hearts: saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. Paul brings the church to the Holy Spirit, the ruach of God, the very breath and wind of God, and shows how deeply God’s people are being taken care of.

The Holy Spirit helps in weakness, especially where prayer runs out of words. Romans 8 says the saints do not always know how to pray as they ought, but the Spirit intercedes with groanings too deep for words. God searches the heart and knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes according to the will of God. The comfort is not that prayer is always strong, but that God is present even when prayer is weak.

Verse 28 sets the familiar promise in its full frame. All things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to his purpose. God’s purpose has that general shape of loving God first and loving the neighbor as oneself, yet God also crafts that purpose according to the gifts placed in each person. Psalm 139’s image of being knitted together in the mother’s womb shows that God’s care began before birth.

Paul then moves into questions and answers. If God is for his people, who can be against them? If God did not withhold his own Son, how will God not also give everything needed? If God justifies, who can condemn? Christ died, Christ was raised, Christ is at the right hand of God, and Christ intercedes.

Paul finally says it plainly: in all these things, God’s people are more than victorious through him who loved them. Death, life, angels, rulers, present things, coming things, powers, height, depth, and anything else in creation cannot separate the beloved from the love of God in Christ Jesus the Lord. Psalm 23’s shepherd picture fits the promise: Jesus alone is the good shepherd, and he guides his people to pleasant places and, one day, to heaven.

The picture of the boy taking the sad soldier past every guard into President Lincoln’s office gives flesh to the promise. Christ takes the weary by the hand and brings them to the Father. Prayer becomes that open door now, through the Holy Spirit, with peace, joy, direction, hope, and the real presence of God.
