Paul sets Ephesians 4:25-27 inside the larger call to take off the old clothes and put on the new self. The old life walked in darkness, hardness, sensuality, and deceitful desires. Christ did not save broken sinners so that sin could keep its old power. Christ saved a people to wear righteousness and holiness in real, practical, everyday ways.
Paul starts with falsehood because lies belong to the old life and look too much like the devil. The devil is “the father of lies,” the murderer from the beginning, the one who cannot stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Jesus is the truth, and the redeemed person is not trying to become truthful in order to be saved. The redeemed person speaks the truth because Christ has already brought righteousness near.
Falsehood shows up in more places than blatant lying. Exaggerated stories, dishonest business, hidden sin, gossip, manipulation, broken promises, and pretending at church all keep dirty clothes on the floor and then put them back on again. The Christian life asks hard questions before speaking: Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it loving? Is Christ honored by it? The heart stays soft when sin is confessed quickly, and the mind learns to reject lies when it is saturated with God’s Word.
Paul then commands each one to speak truth with his neighbor because believers are members of one another. The body of Christ cannot live on half-truths, flattery, gossip, or spiritual pretending. Truth without love can become judgmental, and love without truth can become compromise. Christian speech must be honest, dependable, gracious, courageous, encouraging, and humble, especially when correction is needed.
Paul also says, “Be angry and do not sin.” Anger itself is a God-given emotion, and God himself gets angry at evil. But most human anger is not righteous anger. It usually comes from wounded pride, disrespect, inconvenience, or not getting one’s way. Unresolved anger grows into hurt, resentment, bitterness, hatred, and division.
Paul’s warning is simple: do not leave the front door open. Every grudge left unresolved hangs out the welcome sign for the enemy. The devil cannot possess the one who belongs to Christ, but he can exploit open doors, weaken testimony, divide relationships, and harm the church. Healthy churches are built by ordinary believers practicing ordinary gospel obedience every single day.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Truthfulness belongs to redeemed people The new self does not speak truth to earn a place in Christ. The new self speaks truth because Christ has already redeemed and clothed his people in righteousness. Falsehood is not a small personality flaw, but a return to the dirty clothes of the old life. [49:17]
- 2. Truth and love must stay together Truth by itself can become harsh, sharp, and proud. Love by itself can become soft compromise that refuses to rescue a brother or sister from danger. Christian maturity speaks what is true in a way that seeks restoration, not superiority. [65:39]
- 3. Anger must not move in Anger may be righteous when God’s glory and justice are at stake. But unresolved anger becomes fertile soil where sin grows deep roots. The issue is not merely feeling anger, but letting anger settle down and start ruling the heart. [74:46]
- 4. The devil wants an open door The devil looks for footholds through dishonesty, unforgiveness, pride, and unresolved conflict. The believer belongs to Christ and cannot be owned by Satan, but tolerated sin gives him room to tempt more effectively. Every act of obedience closes a door that sin tried to leave open. [88:59]
- 5. Extinguish anger while it is small A spark near a campfire may look insignificant, but left alone it can ignite a forest. Anger works the same way when it is allowed to sleep overnight and harden into bitterness. Wisdom deals with the spark before it becomes division.
