Isaiah promises that the word that goes out from God’s mouth will not return empty but will accomplish what he pleases and prosper in what he sends it to do. Matthew sets that promise beside the picture of a farmer who does what no sensible farmer would do. The sower scatters seed anywhere and everywhere, with a generosity that ignores the odds and trusts the power in the seed. Jesus is not giving farming advice.
