The law stands as a shadow of the good things to come, not the very image. Hebrews 10:1 names it plainly, so the law cannot make those who approach perfect. Christ is the real thing. A photo can point to a person, but once the person walks into the room, nobody keeps hugging the photo. The Old Testament gives the photograph. Jesus gives the face-to-face.

The Passover lamb sets the pattern. A spotless lamb is slain, its blood set on the doorposts, and judgment passes over. God says, “When I see the blood, I will pass over you.” In Christ the pattern reaches fullness. God sees the blood of his Son, and exemption is granted from what would rightly fall. No more slaughtering goats to break old curses. If a goat is going to be slaughtered, let it be for food. Deliverance flows only from the blood of Jesus, the true Passover.

Noah’s ark paints another picture. The flood comes, judgment is real, but the word of God to Noah is, “Come into the ark, you and all your household.” In Christ, the ark stands open. Those who are in him are not under condemnation. No bunker is needed. Refuge is a person, not a structure.

The bronze serpent shows the posture of saving faith. Israel is snake-bitten, but those who look to the lifted serpent live. Jesus ties the knot himself: “As Moses lifted up the serpent… so must the Son of Man be lifted up.” The saving look is not a look at the wound or a stare at one’s own failure. The saving look is a look at Christ.

The sacrificial system teaches that life is in the blood and atonement requires blood. Yet those sacrifices only covered; they could never complete. Christ comes as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Hebrews 10 says he offered “one sacrifice for sins forever” and then sat down. Sitting down means the work is finished. Nothing more remains to be added by ritual, repetition, or superstition. The Day of Atonement hints at this once-a-year approach by the high priest into the Most Holy Place. Christ carries that pattern past the veil, not as a shadow but as the substance, securing what the shadows could only sketch.
